Nicholas was born on August 31, 1925 in Molfetta, Italy. His family immigrated to America when he was 8 years old. He resided in Hoboken, NJ with his parents, Joseph and Rosa Picca along with his younger sister and only sibling, Mary Materek who is currently living in NJ. During his senior year of high school, he voluntarily enlisted in the US Navy where he became the Pharmacist Mate 1st Class on the LST 372 stationed overseas in the English Channel. After the war, he secured a job at Seifert’s Pharmacy in Guttenberg, NJ in 1946 while attending Rutgers College of Pharmacy. An excellent student, he received the highest math award, the Rho Chi and was a member of the pharmacy fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta. He graduated Rutgers in 1950. On September 24, 1950, he married his love, Genevieve M. Musto, also a pharmacist and alumnus of Rutgers College. They were blessed to have celebrated 70 years of marriage upon his passing.
Because Nicholas had such a strong work ethic and dedication to the business, he was entrusted to take over the pharmacy after the owner/ his partner, Eric Seifert passed. He purchased the pharmacy in 1969. Seifert’s Pharmacy became a second home for our family growing up and a place of comfort for customers throughout the community. The pharmacy continues to operate to this day by his sons, William and Robert Picca, under the same namesake out of respect for Mr. Seifert the original owner. Nicholas was spoken of highly and referred to by many as “Nick from the pharmacy”.
Nicholas and Genevieve bought their home in North Bergen where they raised their 4 children, William, Robert, Jean and Renee. His wife still resides at that residence. They eventually purchased a summer home at the Jersey Shore where the family shared many good times with family and friends. When he wasn’t working, Nick loved to fish. He could be found on the beach fishing, on a charter boat or off the Long Branch Pier always with a cigar in mouth and fishing rod in hand. Nicholas devoted his entire life to his family and the pharmacy.
Nicholas is survived by his beloved wife, Genevieve; their 4 loving children, William Picca and his wife, Mary Anne; Robert Picca; Jean and her husband, Walt Rant; Renee and her husband, Richard Mitchell; their 10 grandchildren, Monica Picca, Thomas Rant, Brian Rant, Rebecca and her husband, Rick Rean, Craig Rant, Jessica Rant, Erik Rant, Christine Mitchell, Amanda and her husband, Michael Domingues-Oriundo, Victoria Mitchell; and their 2 great grandchildren, Luna Rant and Anastasia Rose Domingues-Oriundo.
