Agnes immigrated to New York City in 1984 in search of a better life for herself and her son, Kenneth. In 1987, she welcomed her second child, Edward, and soon after married his father, Sydney Prescod. Determined and caring, Agnes pursued a career in healthcare and became a Certified Nursing Assistant at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, where she worked faithfully until her retirement.
A woman of many passions, Agnes found joy in gardening, playing the piano and organ, and staying active in her church, community, and choir. Even after becoming a mother of two, she remained dedicated to her personal growth, continuing her nursing education at Medgar Evers College.
During the holidays, her home was filled with the aroma of her famous rum cakes and black cake, a true reflection of the warmth and love she shared. Though she didn’t have much, Agnes gave everything she had to support and uplift her children.
In 2017, she moved to Texas, where she spent her remaining years surrounded by family and friends. Wherever she went, she brought with her a spirit of togetherness, kindness, and love guided always by the simple, powerful question: What would Jesus do?
She is preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Mahalia Byam and her husband Sydney Prescod.
Agnes leaves behind to honor her memory, sons; Kenneth Byam and Edward Prescod, brothers; Danroy and Ernott, sisters; Mathilda, Muriel, Erene, Gleva, and Esmie, grandchildren; Keosha Byam and Da'quan Marshall.
We would like to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported our mother throughout her journey, especially during times when we could not be there ourselves. Thank you to Stephanie and Yesenia Minaya, the staff and friends at the senior centers, and her entire church family for surrounding her with love and care.
A special thank you to the Scipio and Kuykendall families for embracing her as one of their own welcoming her at family gatherings, during holidays, and making sure she was never left out, always with a warm meal and open arms.
To Amanda Radabaugh and family, thank you for your selfless care and compassion, taking her to appointments, checking in constantly, and keeping us informed every step of the way.
Most importantly, to my wife I know that the last several years have not been easy. From her move from New York to Texas, organizing her medical care, finding senior centers, accompanying her to the hospital, and being our unwavering rock. Your love and strength carried us through this journey. I love you!
