Born to John and Rosie Wenzel on their family farm near Selma, TX., Tony was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who touched the lives of all who knew him.
He was married for 71 years to his beloved wife, Lorine, and together they raised six children: Kathy Huber, Suzie Marcella (Doug), Joanie Brooks (Larry), Allen Wenzel (Elizabeth), Christy Dempsey (Patrick), and Liz Tullis.
Tony’s first school was Lookout Valley, a one room school where he learned English (German was spoken at home). He then attended primary school at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School and graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1948. He attended business school prior to joining the Air Force, and proudly served his country for four years. Upon returning to San Antonio, he worked for Roadway Express Trucking Company for 30 years. He was beloved by his coworkers and was greatly missed when he retired. Soon after, he started his “retirement career” as a bus driver for Northeast School District and continued for 14 years.
Tony was tireless in his work and his play. All through his working years, he raised animals at his homestead on Judson Rd., which was one mile from his parents’ farm. As an avid bowler, he was a lifetime member of the Bracken Bowling Club (9-pin), where he and Lorine bowled since 1969. They both also bowled in 10-pin bowling leagues. Tony had a passion for golf which he took up at the age of 55 and continued to play until he was 90. He was proud of his hole-in-one, shooting his age at 84, and the many friends he made along the way.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church was exceptionally important to Tony. He was a member of the church from the day he was born until the day he died. He was greatly loved by the priests and fellow parishioners and was a dedicated member of the St. Michael’s Society.
Tony is preceded in death by his son, Allen; grandson, Conrad Tullis; brothers Elmer, Harold, Bernard, and John, and sisters Florine Davis, Rosabell Holtz, and Bernadine Petoskey.
He is survived by his wife Lorine; daughters Kathy, Suzie, Joanie, Christy, Liz; daughter-in-law Elizabeth; grandchildren Chris Huber, Eric Marcella, Phillip Parker, Jennifer Von Bon, Stephanie Wenzel, Tyler McGinnis, Morgan McGinnis, Garrett Tullis, and 11 great grandchildren.
Visitation to take place at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Rd, Universal City on Thursday, March 7 from 5:00-6:30 PM with a Rosary and short service at 6:30 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday March 8 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 16075 N Evans Rd, Selma at 11:00 AM; followed by graveside services and a lunch reception at the church.
