Doris Snyder Walter passed away on 3 May 2024 in San Antonio, TX. Doris was born 26 Jan 1929 to Sheldon Snyder and Mabel Guyer Snyder. She was born and raised in Altoona, PA. Following graduation from high school, she attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Altoona, and graduated with an RN. Doris then received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force in 1951 in the nurse corps. She was assigned to Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. During this assignment, she met and married her husband, Alonzo J. Walter, Jr., also a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force.
Doris spent the next 30 years moving all around the world with her husband. She was a tireless volunteer in every community as well as a leader. She was a model Air Force wife. Doris used her nursing degree to volunteer for the Red Cross, and spent years volunteering with the Girl Scouts. She was a faithful Christian. Following his retirement, they spent time in Austin, TX and finally moved to San Antonio, TX.
She is predeceased by her husband of 70 years Alonzo, her parents Sheldon and Mabel Snyder, and 4 siblings. Doris Walter is survived by her daughters Terry Gabreski (Don) and Beverly Myers (Gary); grandchildren Kimberly Yandell (Brandon), Lawrence Myers (Seerat), Matthew Gabreski (Mackenzie) and Mark Gabreski; great grandchildren Everett Yandell, Violet Yandell, and Olivia Myers; and her sister Audrey.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Monday, June 3, 2024, at 11:00 am. A committal service with full military honors will follow at 2:00 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Shelter #1.
