He was born September 18, 1933 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Thad and Beulah Carroll. He served in the Air Force and retired as a decorated Colonel and helicopter pilot. He is survived by his daughter; Thea Scott of Universal City; grandson Jason Scott; granddaughter Lindsey Rapp; granddaughters Katie Bowers and Bailey Quill; great-grandsons Ian Scott, Tyler Scott, Leland Rapp, Bryeden Rapp, Chase Scott, and Rowdy Quill.
James is preceded in death by his wife, Jean Carroll; daughter Dianna Bowers; brother Herman Carroll; and parents Thad and Buela Carroll.
James spent his life’s work doing what he loved- playing music and flying for the Air Force. He came from humble beginnings and created a family and life that many would admire all through music and his military career. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, husband, father, and grandfather and a pillar in his community.
James’ love of flying was a close second only to that of his love of music. He never heard a song he couldn’t play, a note he couldn’t read, or an instrument he couldn’t master. He was a staple at the local Senior Center playing, “Name that Tune” for residents.
James's legacy will continue to live on as we carry him in our hearts and fond memories.
A committal service for James will be held Monday, May 12, 2025 from 11:30 AM to 11:50 AM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas.
