Doris Jean Ross Lokey, affectionately known as Jean, and occasionally as “Queen Jean” to some, a beloved and devoted member of her community, peacefully passed away in the arms of her son and youngest daughter on December 29, 2025, at the age of 94 and a half.
Jean was born on June 19, 1931, in Bedias, Texas to Ike and Bernice Raines Ross, both deceased. Jean’s older siblings were Opal Ross Losack and Stanley Ross, both have preceded her in death.
From her early years in Bedias, Jean was raised on a very small cattle ranch by her Great Aunt Osie and Uncle John Corner with her very own horse named Bobby Jack Boston, with no running water or electricity. Jean became the beloved wife of Bobbie “Bob” Austin Lokey in 1949 and was a devoted mother of four children. They raised their family in Freeport, Texas, then moved the family to Universal City in 1971.
Jean dedicated much of her professional life to teaching preschool in her church for many years, followed by a lengthy stint in retail sales at the Bible Bookstore in UC. Her work life reflected her love for Jesus, little ones, and connection with others.
Over the years Jean fellowshipped at Velasco Baptist Church in Freeport, then First Baptist Church of Schertz, Trinity Church, and finally Grace Community Church in UC, all for very lengthy seasons of her life. Those who knew her will fondly remember her ability to bring laughter into any gathering with her comical openness and always giving the greatest hugs. She never met a stranger, had the perfect Texas accent, and people fell in love with her because what’s not to love?
In her personal life, Jean had many interests, including family gatherings, camping trips and vacations, singing and playing guitar, sewing, reading her Bible, and active participation in the church choir and home ministry groups. Jean loved to challenge family members to Scrabble games and enjoyed working crossword puzzles. From an early age, she was known for her witty humor, quirky comments and stories, kindness, loyalty, and even an adventurous nature—many gracious qualities that sparkled throughout her life. She lived a long and remarkable life filled with her love for family, music, and Jesus, exuding a peace and joy with her remarkable spirit that touched so many.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years in marriage, Bob Lokey in 2018. She is survived by her son Scott Lokey (wife Dewanna) of Universal City, daughter, Jan Lokey Owen (husband Nick) of Jacksboro, TX, daughter Judy Ann Lokey McCurry (husband Reavy) of Corpus Christi, and grandson Shawn Behrendt and great-granddaughter Madelynn of Seguin, daughter Joy Lokey of Universal City, and grandsons Jeff Noethen (wife Alysia) of Seattle, WA, and Stephen Noethen (wife Sarah) of Schertz and great-grandson Hunter.
Jean will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She leaves a legacy of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, and long-suffering that lives on in the hearts of the many she touched, especially her family.
Our Family would like to extend our sincere thanks to all our friends, neighbors, church families, acquaintances, and caregivers for your faithful prayers, exquisite care, and warm compassion during this time that has been so deeply felt and so very much appreciated.
