Joan and Lloyd met on a blind date on March 4, 1966 for Joan’s School of Nursing, Spring Formal. Lloyd was stationed at Chanute AFB at Rantoul, Illinois and Joan was in her third year of study at Burnham Hospital School of Nursing. A friend who had arranged the blind date suggested to Lloyd that he call Joan for another date which Lloyd did. Joan accepted and they had their first date in April. Played Par Three golf and never were apart again. Lloyd asked Joan to marry him in May 19, 1966 just before Lloyd was due to be separated from the Air Force and Joan accepted. Lloyd was afraid to ask Joan but he said the song by the Outsiders “Time Won’t Let Me” gave him the push he needed to ask the most precious person he had even known to be his wife. They were married on March 10, 1967 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, by Pastor Carl Karlwarf. They honeymooned in Belleville, Illinois at their rented home. Joan graduated from nursing school and joined Lloyd at Belleville (along with their Siamese cat Susie) and she started working at the local hospital. On December 13, 1969 their first son, William Lloyd, was born and shortly after Christmas they moved to Offutt AFB, Nebraska which was in Omaha. Joan worked nights at the local hospital. Joan was very busy with working and taking care of Billy who was a very active little guy. She worked on weekends a lot but always attended Sunday Worship Service with Lloyd and Billy. She never failed in her loving care of family though. Lloyd was selected to attend Officer Training School at Lackland AFB Texas and was commissioned 2d Lt in July 1971. Lloyd and Joan were then sent to Kessler AFB, Mississippi for Personnel Technical School. Joan was expecting son number two at the time. They enjoyed the Biloxi, Mississippi area and also visited New Orleans a few times. After graduating from Tech School Joan and Lloyd were assigned to Duluth IAP, Minnesota. Joan worked at a local hospital on the evening shift so she could be home with Billy while Lloyd was at Work. She fed everyone, kept a neat clean home and never asked for much. She was dearly loved. In the summer of 1973 the family was reassigned to Incirlik, Turkey. Turkey was a great tour of duty. They visited the Cappadocia area and Tarsus. The many crusader castles were very interesting. Joan did not work during this time and enjoyed being able to be a member of the OWC and the Turkish-American club and just being the greatest wife and mother. Lloyd’s next assignment was at Minot AFB, North Dakota. It was a very happy time. Joan did not work at nursing but worked being a wonderful wife and mother, an awesome lady. Joan became active in Cub Scouting and was a super Den Leader for a group of Wolf Cub Scouts. Jacob, son number three, was born in Minot on October 2, 1976. Afterward Joan and Lloyd were assigned to Lackland AFB, Texas: Univ of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota: Randolph AFB, Texas; Ramstein AB, Germany. While in Germany, Joan enjoyed scouting and earned her Woodbadge beads, the highest training offered by scouting and was selected to receive the District Award of Merit for her outstanding work in scouting. In 1988, Lloyd and Joan retired from the Air Force as a major after 26 years of service. Joan and Lloyd returned to the home at 9806 Spruce Ridge, Converse, Texas. Joan’s support and loving care as Lloyd’s devoted wife enabled him to serve his country. Joan was able to renew her RN certification after a lot of hard work. She had to take many courses. She was wonderful. She started working at North East Baptist Hospital in the nursery as a neonatal ICU nurse. Joan then worked as a Certified Lactation Nurse for North East Baptist. She was a wonderful and caring medical professional.
It was a job she enjoyed so very much but her knees and back had finally told her it was time to stop. Two knee and back operations caused her to have to retire and she also had to give up her gardening and many other activities. She then enjoyed quilting and her cats and dog. Through the passing away of her parents, she was finally reunited with her sister Sharon. Joan being the Christian lady she was, was able to give her Church, King of Kings Lutheran Church, nearly $50,000 during a tough time in the Church’s finances. For over 44 years, Lloyd was blessed with the most wonderful soul this world has seen. Joan provided great love in taking care of her family’s every need. She was a fabulous cook, had a green thumb, was an accomplished violinist, a super scouter. In the 44 years of marriage Lloyd and Joan never had an argument. Their souls and spirits were truly one and will be forever and a day. Her place in heaven is secure by the grace and mercy of her savior Jesus Christ.
