He graduated from Stephenville High School, North Texas State University and George Washington University. Col. Bishop was in the US Air Force for 26 years. Twenty of those years were in aviation as a navigator and he enjoyed every one of those years. His last 6 years were in administrative positions, but found flying a desk not one of his favorite activities.
While in the Air Force he was stationed in Texas, Alabama and Colorado as well as England two times, Germany and Thailand. While stationed in Thailand he flew 244 combat missions. Of all of his assignments his favorite was as the US Air Force Exchange Officer at the Royal Air Force War College at Old Sarum, England.
After retirement in 1979, he began his second career as a professor in the Management Department at San Antonio College for 15 years – a job he embraced and thoroughly enjoyed. His third career was as a volunteer docent at the San Antonio Zoo for 21 years. That may have been his favorite career of them all. He was also a proud member of the Windcrest Lions Club for many years and was named a Hometown Hero in 2001 for his work with the youth of Windcrest and Northeast San Antonio.
He is survived by the love of his life – Joyce – son Joe David Bishop and his wife Debra of Colorado and daughter, Janice Diane Hornbeck of Virginia. Joe and Joyce also have 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way.
