Mary was born February 16, 1935 in Center TX to Ezra and Loyce Smith. Mary was the second of 7 children. Mary was baptized at the young age of 10 and maintained her committment to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ throughout her life. Mary grew up in Diboll TX and some of her accomplishments in high school were being drum major and homecoming queen. She met Doyle Eugene Grissom and they married on November 6, 1953 when Mary was a young 18 years of age. Doyle and Mary just celebrated 65 years of marriage! Mary and Doyle were blessed with 4 children, Ronald Alvin (Ronnie), Kathryn Ann (Kathy), Sheila Kay and Cynthia Lee (Cindy).
Mary and Doyle had the privilege to live around the country with Doyle's work and in each place; Mary remained faithful in serving our Lord. Eventually, Mary and Doyle made their permanent home in San Antonio. Mary visited Terrell Hills Baptist Church which was located on Harry Wurzbach in 1957 and when they returned from Hawaii in 1962, Mary and Doyle joined there to serve. Terrell Hills First Baptist became Crestview Baptist Church when it was relocated to Windcrest and Mary remained a member and served throughout the years. Some of Mary's favorite times were being a greeter for visitors, Women's ministry, being a Deacon's wife, playing on the church volleyball team, singing in the choir and serving on committees including the Pastor search which brought Harvey Hoffman to Crestview in 1964 and began a lifelong friendship to the family.
Mary loved her family and she was always quick to give you a hug and lend an ear. Her family was everything to her. Mary was a devoted mother, wife and sister and she dearly loved the annual sister trips that she and her sisters took. Mary looked forward to planning and taking these annual sister trips and the stories abounded for months afterward. Mary's quick wit and humor was her signature characteristic and that will surely be missed. Mary also volunteered at the Northeast Baptist Hospital for more than 25 years she had put in over 5000 hours.
Mary is survived by her loving husband Doyle, her daughter Sheila and husband KR Ziarkowski, her daughter Cindy and husband Bo Hollingsworth, her daughter Kathy Grissom, her grandson Stephen Hollingsworth and granddaughter Jaime Hollingsworth. In addition, she is survived by her sister Lucille and husband Lindal, her sister Bettie Havard and a host of nieces and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her son Ronnie Grissom, her parents Ezra and Loyce Smith, her brothers James and Alic Smith and her sisters Ollie Mae Day and Julette Odom.
