Nelda married the love of her life, Richard Johnson, on June 11, 1954, in Austin, Texas. Their 64 years together included adventures of love, laughter, many trips with friends, life’s hardships and sorrows, sickness, joyful births of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. As they faithfully served God, He truly blessed their union of matrimony.
Nelda is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lee Johnson (1932 - 2018) and son, Terry Lee Johnson (1952 - 1996) and is survived by her daughter, Gena René Caruthers and husband, David Kyle Caruthers. Nelda was a long-time member of Christian Life Church in Austin, Texas, until they moved to San Antonio, Texas, in 2009 to be closer to their daughter. The Old Hens of Austin, from CLC were a tight group. Getting together to play cards, chat, eat, and laugh. She loved you all. Few have been blessed in this life with friendships as she shared with Alice Faye Carrol and Joyce Deal. Thank you for being faithful, trustworthy friends. Your hearts hold a vault of love, friendship secrets, and everlasting loyalty. One can only hope to have a friend like you in their lives.
Nelda will always be remembered as a Christian, loyal friend, traveler, lover of beautiful puzzles, card and domino player, and..... Dr. Pepper drinker. Her daughter, Gena remarks, “in 86 years I’ve never seen her put on tennis shoes and go for a walk to exercise or put moisturizer on her face to rid the wrinkles. Instead, she lived life to its fullest, enjoying every day possible. For breakfast she loved crispy bacon, croissants with LOTS of jelly, and fried eggs. Her evening snack of choice was a Dr. Pepper and homemade chocolate cookies. Her wish for each of us remaining is to seize the day and enjoy life, live for God and not this world, and she wants to see us on the other side”!
