Peter George Salyards passed into the arms of our Lord, surrounded by his family at home in Converse, on November 18, 2022 following a short illness.
Peter was born in Chicago and raised in Deerfield, Illinois, and was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Olive Megan (Ginsberg). Together, they raised five children through assignments in England, Ohio, California, Idaho, Utah, Virginia, Hawaii, and Texas.
Peter was a devout Christian and active parishioner of St. Monica’s Roman Catholic Church in Converse for over 43 years, serving as an usher. He was a voracious reader, liked growing cucumbers and tomatoes, and adored his cats.
Peter retired from the U.S. Air Force after a 28-year active duty career at the rank of senior master sergeant (E-8) as an Administration Superintendent and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and Army Commendation Medal, amongst other awards and decorations. Peter was a graduate of the MAC NCO Academy and earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Work Center Management through the Community College of the Air Force.
Following the service, Peter worked for 18 years for Beneficial Finance in San Antonio, earning the title of Senior Customer Service Representative. In retirement, he volunteered for many years with the Converse Police department.
Peter is survived by his sons Stephen, of Medina, and John and his wife, Donna, of North Chelmsford, Massachusetts; daughters Michele and her husband, Matt Koch, of Fair Oaks Ranch, and Victoria and her husband, Michael Monroe, of San Antonio; five grandchildren, Brent, Brian, David, Madeleine, and Lorelei; and brother Phillip and his wife, Bonnie, of Bella Vista, Arkansas.
Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Olive, son, Peter “Rikki”, parents, Henry and Catherine (Altman), and brothers Thomas and Henry “Hank”.
A Celebration of Life Service will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Inurnment will occur at a later date at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
