

Chief Master Sergeant Theodore “Ted” John Toten, United States Air Force (Retired), passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026. Ted was born on June 14, 1933, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, to John Toten and Anne Rakoci Toten.
Ted proudly served his country for 28 years in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1980 after a distinguished military career marked by dedication, leadership, and integrity. He continued his service to the nation through the Army Civil Service until his retirement in 1991. A lifelong advocate for veterans, Ted was an active member of American Legion Post 593, where he served as Post Commander from 2005 to 2006. He was also a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, Chapter 1075, and the National Association for Uniformed Services.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Nette Ray Meadows Toten. He is survived by his wife, Sarah J. Toten; his daughters, Dr. Tracey Toten Cole and her husband Steve, and Elsene Ray Toten Nelson and her husband Jack; and his son, USAF Senior Airman Samuel Robert Nelson. He is also lovingly remembered by his blended family: Julian R. Velasquez; Sonia Velasquez and family; David J. Velasquez; Miranda Velasquez and family; as well as numerous extended family members and dear friends in and around Sharon, Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 593, 326 Legion Drive West, Converse, Texas 78109, to support veterans and their programs.
A Committal Service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2025, at 11:15 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery (Shelter 2); 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209. A reception will follow at American Legion Post 593; 326 Legion Drive West, Converse, Texas 78109. All are invited to attend and celebrate Ted’s life and legacy of service.
