

Allen Burton Chappell, 87, went to The Lord’s house on November 10, 2011. He was born in Dendron, VA to the late William Clinton and Helena Stryker Chappell. He served our country as a medic overseas in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from Norfolk Shipbuilding and Dry-dock as a foreman in the carpenter shop after thirty-nine years. He played and coached the shipyard apprenticeship basketball team. He also served as a volunteer member of the Junior Achievement organization, training young people with his expertise in carpenter skills. He was a member of Rosemont Christian Church in the place he always called home, Portlock.
Mr. Chappell was preceded in death by a daughter Dianne Chappell Judge, four brothers and three sisters. Left with many loving memories of him is his lifetime love and caregiver, his wife, Leona Mae Owens Chappell; daughter, Dolores Chappell Murphy and husband Ernie; sister, Tama Evans; brother, Ranny Chappell; grandchildren, Kevin Murphy, Todd Murphy, Karen Hibbard, Christina Judge, Kelly Duke, Jenny Birdzell; and eight great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home where a funeral service will be held on Monday, 2:00 p.m. by The Rev. Jerry Kilyk. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park with a reception to follow in the funeral home.
