VA Beach - Barbara Barnes Boden, a former resident of Seaside at Atlantic Shores, peacefully and happily slipped out of her body on January 22, 2014. A native of New York City, she was born 93 years ago, the daughter of Edward and Sylvia Barnes. Majoring in French, she graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University, in Manhattan. She had many years of teaching experience at Tidewater Psychological Institute in Norfolk, aboard Navy ships in port, and teaching English as a second language both here and abroad. She showed her hand built ceramics, paintings and hangings locally and in New York. She was an active member of the Ceramics Designers Assn., the Contemporary Art Center, and she went on several trips to Central and South America with Earthwatch. She is survived by Dale Boden, her beloved husband of 68 years; a brother, Roger Barnes of Connecticut; a son and a daughter; 4 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Family and friends may attend a memorial service at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home on Friday, January 31, at 3:30 p.m. Graveside service will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Northfield Mount Herman School in Northfield, Massachusetts where Barbara attended high school in the 1930's.
