

Betty Lou Bakken Ford, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully passed away in her sleep on April 4, 2026, at the age of 80.
Betty was known for her quick wit and deep love for her family. She cherished every moment spent with them and brought warmth, laughter, and strength to those around her. Her home and heart were always open, and she created countless memories with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the love she shared will live on through her family for generations.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Howard Smith, Edward “Buddy” Smith, Johnson Smith, Bobby Smith and Jimmy Smith, her sister Hazel Smith, and her son-in-law Troy Showalter.
She is survived by her children: Tammy Showalter, Teresa “Treenae” Swanson and her husband Richard Swanson, and Dennis “Denny O” Bakken and his wife Amy Bakken.
Betty was a proud grandmother to Troy “TJ” and Allie Showalter, Terry and Hanbyeol Swanson, Tiffany Showalter, Alex Swanson, Cortney Winslow, Adam Swanson, Katelyn Walters, Aaron Swanson, Azairia Swanson, Ryann Bakken, Tyler Swanson, Brendan Bakken, and Zander Bakken.
She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Michael Swanson, Scarlett Showalter, Amelia “Millie” Showalter, Dallas Swanson, and Maverick Swanson, who brought her great joy, a sister-in-law Cathleen Smith and several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Betty also leaves behind her loyal companion and “partner in crime,” Jelly Bean, who was always faithfully by her side.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, April 14th at 2:00 PM at: 601 North Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462.
A Celebration of life will be held on the evening of May 23, at Miss Kitty's on Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach.
Betty will be remembered for the love she gave so freely to her family and friends. Her strength, humor, and the memories she created with those she loved will never be forgotten. Though she may be gone from our sight, she will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
