I was blessed to have the love and companionship of Don Dozier for 40 wonderful years.  At the risk of inflating his ego, I told him he was an answer to prayer.  During the lonely days after my divorce at age 41, I prayed for a new husband – one like my daddy whom I dearly loved.   Not just anyone, but one with his characteristics.  

He accepted my children and later my grandchildren as his own.  His own children became my bonus family and I became an instant grandmother.

He had a great work ethic and provided well for his family.  I once expressed a desire for an automatic dishwasher.  He said, “Why, you already have one.”  Which was true.

He took his responsibilities very seriously, but he could be silly and lots of fun.  The grandchildren could attest that he was a tease.  He always said he could be found in one of three places, at work, at home, or at church.  Thalia Lynn and especially the Fellowship Sunday School class were very dear to his heart.

He was a thoughtful, kind and gentle man who loved well, and was very well loved.


Gran,
I cannot put into words the joy, love, and happiness you have brought to my life.  You have always been there for me such as taking me to church, teaching me the love of  Jesus, and helping me raise my boys.  Your pure unconditional love has been the beacon that has guided me through my journey.  You are the wind beneath my wings and my hero.  I will deeply miss your presence on this earth but know you are still with me.  You are not just my grandfather but my DAD.

I drove here today in my grandfather's car.

As his health started to wane and it was no longer safe for him to be driving, the decision was made to offer the car to me for a price I couldn't say no to. I don't know how supportive of the decision he was at the time--his stubbornness proved to be his most enduring quality--but I'm sure it's one he approves of now. It is now perhaps the smallest part of an incredible legacy he leaves behind.

He leaves behind a legacy of hard work - memories of a garage full of tools, building a gazebo, and a pneumatic log splitter which was one of the coolest things I had ever seen at the time.

He leaves behind a legacy of mischief - whether it was refusing to let go of your hand when shaking it, his Grinch slippers, or answering the door only to shut it in your face with a cry of "we don't want any!"

And he leaves behind a legacy of family - playing with siblings and cousins in the castle in the backyard, loud and hectic Christmas Eve celebrations where two families seamlessly blended into one, a spiritual family he helped shape among his Sunday School class.

While a man who takes up the space that Don did will leave those who loved him with a sense of loss, he also leaves  much of himself behind to be appreciated, to be celebrated, and to be emulated. We will miss you and may we pick up where you left off.

So many fond memories of Don.. my 6foot7 jack loved teasing him and picking him up on occasion.   We particularly  remember  with love the  wonderful sunday school lessons over those many years.  He made the fellowship class a special place to be. Prayers for the family and friends  .  Your influence  lives on the hearts of so many.   Pat steele and family.   Look for  big jack up there and get that big bear hug.  

Daddy you are going to be greatly missed. Thank you for always taking care of us kids growing up, we all love you very much❤️ Your youngest, Teresa (Punkin & Tree) as you always called me. I love you Daddy
