Donald Harold Rudy, known affectionately as “Rudy,” passed away on April 23, 2025, at the age of 97. Born in Gusher, Utah, on December 17, 1927, he was the son of the late Czar and Margaret Miles Rudy.
Rudy grew up working alongside his father in the fields and forests of Utah, skid-steering logs and tending the family farm. He was also a skilled amateur boxer—tough, disciplined, and duty-bound, qualities that defined his life.
In December 1945, at just 17, Rudy answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. He served proudly aboard the USS Currituck, USS Kermit Roosevelt, USS Formoe, and USS Orion, and loved life at sea. One of his greatest adventures was as a member of Operation High Jump, Admiral Byrd’s 4th expedition to Antarctica. He retired in 1966 as a Chief Petty Officer after more than 20 years of military service. He went on to serve another 20 years as a clerk with the U.S. Marshals Service, retiring in 1986 after four decades of dedication to his country.
In his retirement, Rudy turned his heart fully toward his family and faith. He was a devoted grandfather, spending countless hours showing his grandsons the country and teaching them how to play cards—and most importantly, how to live with honor, integrity, and purpose. To those who knew him, Rudy wasn’t just a card player—he was a legend.
Rudy was a faithful and active member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, where he served the parish community by helping count the collection every Sunday with quiet dedication for over 20 years.
Rudy is now reunited with the love of his life, his cherished wife of 67 years, Betty Hook Rudy. He was also preceded in death by his seven brothers and sisters.
Left to carry on his memory are his son, Donald C. Rudy (Cindy); daughter, Cynthia Rudy (David Hutchins); grandchildren, Christopher Rudy Tan (Beth), Kian Lee Tan (Sarah), and Jacob Czar Rudy (Tiffany); and 8 great-grandchildren, Bridget, Thomas, Jack, Andrew, Jada, Harper, Jameson, and Betty.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rudy’s memory to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia or to any organization supporting the Native American community- a cause close to his heart.
