

Norfolk - Frederick William Martens, 95, passed away on July 20, 2013 at Northeast Community Hospice in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on March 13, 1918 in Corona, New York to William J. and Katherine Martens. He joined the US Navy in 1936 and served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. After the war he and his wife Mary Jo settled in Norfolk, Virginia. They had two sons, William Michael Martens and Frederick Clements Martens. He worked in Civil Service as a Planner and Estimator at Norfolk NAS. He also joined the Navy Reserves and retired with the rank of Senior Chief. Sports was always an important part of his life. In his spare time he coached little league baseball teams at Norfolk NAS and Benmorral Park. After retirement he moved to North Fort Myers, Florida. He continued to remain active, playing golf, tennis, and billiards. He competed at the county and state levels of the Florida Senior Games and won numerous medals. After Mary Jo's passing he married Claire LeClerc. He is predeceased by his first wife, Mary Jo, his second wife, Claire, and his younger son, Frederick Clements Martens. He is survived by his elder son, William; three grandchildren, Kathryn Martens Carson, Sarah Christine Martens, and Brianna Jo Martens; and one great-grandchild, Rachel Leigh Carson. A graveside service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, August 14 at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Rd., Virginia Beach, VA.
