Shane Winston Brooks

Shane was a proud graduate of Old Dominion University, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Science. He served his community and country with honor as a Staff Sergeant in the Virginia National Guard, a role he carried with great dedication and pride. During his 10 year service, he completed a 9 month tour in Iraq.

Shane had a deep love for life and adventure. As a well-decorated marathon runner, he was rarely one to sit still. He loved to fly as a licensed pilot and enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. Known for his unique talents as a certified cyber hacker and master lock picker, he was often the person friends and family called when they were locked out of anything. He also found great joy in pushing himself to go farther with every stride. Whether he was out on a long run, spending time with family, or embracing the small adventures of everyday life, Shane lived with energy, determination, and a spirit that touched everyone around him.

He is survived by his loving mother, Penny Brooks; his brother, Hunter Brooks (Samantha Brooks); his sister, Olivia Schmit; his nephew Kevin Brooks; and his grandmother, Paula Gibson. He also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will carry his memory with them always. Shane was preceded in death by his father, Kevin Winston Brooks and grandmother Betty “Bebe” Brooks.

Though his time here was far too short, Shane made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his strength, and his incredibly sweet and kind heart. Above all, he will be remembered for the love he so freely shared with those closest to him.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 13, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home.

A Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 14, at 10:00 AM at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park.
