

Walter was born and raised on a farm in Vernon Township, New Jersey, where he developed the strong work ethic and sense of duty that would define his life. In 1955, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, completing boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, and Advanced Infantry Training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
His career in the United States Navy began when he enrolled in the Naval Flight Training program in Pensacola, Florida. Walter was selected as the Regimental Commander of the Cadet Corps and received his wings in 1957. He attended the U.S. Naval School of Justice for training as a Legal Officer and later graduated first in his class from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Walter completed two cruises to Vietnam and received numerous awards and commendations in recognition of his leadership and dedication. He retired in 1976 after 21 years of service to his country.
After moving back to New Jersey, Walter began his second career working in Fire Protection Engineering and Property Loss Control. Over the next 20 years, he worked for Factory Mutual Engineering, Protection Mutual Insurance Company, Alexander & Alexander of New York (now AON) and Schirmer Engineering.
Family always came first for Walter, and his life was grounded in a deep and abiding faith. He found great joy in the outdoors, whether fishing, hunting, or playing golf. Those who knew him understood that he was someone they could always count on —steadfast, dependable, and there whenever he was needed most.
Walter is survived by Marie, his soulmate and loving wife of 68 years, his son Eric, grandchildren Madelyn Rivera, Noah Schnitzer, Cateraina Schnitzer, Emma Wesolowski and Charles Wesolowski and great grandchildren Jude Rivera, Jonah Walter Tyree and Rock Rottoer. He was preceded in death by his daughter Tina Marie Rivera.
The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm, on Friday, April10, 2026 at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00am, on Saturday April 11, 2026, at the same location. Bural will be in Sparta, NJ at a later date.
