"68 years ago we began our life's journey on a train to San Francisco. About 10 days ago Dorothy purchased a ticket on the train to eternity. We wanted to journey together but just couldn't afford both tickets at this time. We decided that Dorothy would go first and get things set up for when we were joined together again. She always did that for her family and me. She boarded the train at 7:55 this morning, November 1, 2013. I held her pretty little soft hand as she boarded. I am to follow as soon as I get enough to buy my ticket. As you can imagine I am feeling quite alone at this time. There are no words to express what a beautiful, caring person, the woman of my life was. I can only say she was the best most gracious person that I ever knew." - her husband, Larry Scheidel. Dorothy left behind six wonderful children: Edward and Suzanne Scheidel, Dianne and Bob DeHaan, Karen Wiersma and fiancAC.e Jim Uhen, Char and Tom Sanok, Morris and Carol Scheidel, and Marty and Traci Scheidel; 23 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Maurice "Mac" and Ann McKercher; two step-sisters: Vivenne and Jack VanderBaan and Ruth and Jerry Cunningham; sisters-in-law: Patricia and George Maguire, Barb Hawley, and Marge Scheidel, brother-in-law Raymond and Jan Scheidel; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nellie McKercher, father Earl McKercher, step-mother Alberta McKercher, sister and brother-in-law Maryann and Frank Engelman, granddaughter Sally Szubinski, mother and father-in-law Augie and Viola Scheidel, brother-in-law Edward A. Scheidel, and brother-in-law Lawrence Hawley. Dorothy worked in the cafeteria for both the Wayland High School and the West Michigan Auto Auction.
