Alicia’s story began in the Magnolia Park neighborhood where she met her future husband at the age of 8 when her family moved into the house across the street. At the age of 12, she took piano lessons from her future mother-in-law and later played Folklórico music for dancers in some of the school programs. During the census she acted as a translator for her neighbors who did not speak English.
She fulfilled a childhood dream by joining the Milby Coeds (aka Cadettes) in high school where she played the snare drum in the drum line. She also helped out in Don’s Grocery, the family business her parents opened in a small house next door to their home in the late 1940’s.
After graduating from high school, Alicia attended one year of business college before getting married in April 1956. She kept herself very busy as a stay-at-home mom for 15 years while her children were young serving as homeroom mom; Boy Scout Den Mother; and Stanley Home Products Hostess.
Once she started working outside the home, Alicia served in various administrative and accounting roles that took her from offices in One Shell Plaza to Ellington Air Force Base. Before retiring at the age of 62, Alicia spent 18 years with the 147th Fighter Squadron of the Texas Air National Guard as a civilian payroll clerk at Ellington. After retirement, she frequently served as a poll worker on election days.
Alicia was a woman of many talents. She was an accomplished seamstress who not only made some of her own clothing, but also found time to make clothing for her children when they were young including a few dance recital costumes. She also enjoyed gardening, baking, traveling and spending time with her family and numerous relatives. She continued playing the piano when she had time as well as a game of Scrabble now and then.
Faith was also a big part of Alicia’s life. She regularly attended mass and prayed the rosary daily. She supported her church with both time and talent.
She was preceded in death by her parents Donasiano and Erlinda Ybarra; and sisters Juanita Sepulveda and Rose Erlinda Lopez.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years Reynaldo; four children Donald, Arthur, Diane and Elaine; grandsons Allen, Ryan and Kevin; son-in-law Paul; daughter-in-law Danna; and four siblings: Julia; Zulema; Edward; and Larry.
Alicia will be greatly missed and remembered fondly for her generous spirit and kind heart.
