Allen Eckermann was born in 1940 in New Ulm, Texas. He was the 3rd born in a family of seven children. Growing up, he enjoyed being outdoors and spent most of his time working, hunting and fishing. In the summer of 1959, he met the love of his life, Berta. They were married in November of 1961 and later welcomed two daughters, Kristen and Kendra. Allen was a family man through and through, a wonderful father and a faithful husband of 63 years.
Allen worked most of his life as a long-haul and short-haul truck driver. After retiring in his 60s, he started his own lawncare service, cutting lawns until shortly before his death. Whenever his family would ask him to slow down and consider giving up the business, he would balk, saying “a lot of these old people are counting on me.”
Allen was an avid hunter and could talk for hours about deer hunting. He would spend months getting his land ready for opening day and was always the first one in the blind. In his later years, he took great pleasure sharing his love of hunting with his grandson, Brayden. He also loved to barbecue, participating in dozens of cook-offs and proudly showing off his trophies. When asked (and even when not), he was quick to tell you that when it came to barbecue, he was “a professional.”
Allen truly walked the path of Jesus, always doing whatever he could to help others. After the death of his in-laws, he opened his home to help raise his wife’s three younger siblings. He also opened his home to his brother Dan while he was in school. He spent hundreds of hours volunteering both in Shelby, Texas as well as in League City, TX. He volunteered at the League City Village Fair from its inception, an event that gives back to the League City Lions Club and other charities including interfaith caring ministries, YMCA and the Boy Scouts of America to name a few. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and truly embodied their mission statement.
Allen was a wonderful grandfather and loved spending time with his grandkids. He was a friend to all and a very social person with many life-long friends; he never met a stranger. He was a member of the Sons of Hermann in Shelby, Texas; a member of the League City Gun Club; a member of League City United Methodist Church; and an honorary member of the American Legion in League City, where a plaque will be hung in his honor.
Allen fought many health battles in his life, including cancer, leukemia, congestive heart failure and neuropathy. May his soul now rest in peace having heard his Lord welcoming him home: “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).
Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Louis Eckermann and Lillie Anna Eckermann; stepmother Lorine Eckermann; brother and sister-in-law, Lee Fred Eckermann and his wife Deloris.
He is survived by his wife, Berta Eckermann; daughter, Kristen Brittain and her husband Darren; daughter, Kendra Lyon and her husband Billy; three grandchildren, Alexanne Nejad, Allison Brittain and Brayden Lyon; sister and brother in-law, Joyce and Carl Bridges; brother and sister in-law, Lawrence and Marsha Eckermann; brother and sister in-law, Daniel and Karen Eckermann; brother and sister in-law, Alfred Jr. (Buck) and Sue Eckermann; brother and sister in-law, Arlie and Jennifer Eckermann; 2 great grandchildren; 20 nieces and nephews; 25 great nieces and nephews, several great-great nieces and nephews, along with numerous cousins and extended family and friends.
