Betty Joyce Hogan King was born on June 14, 1932 in Orange County, Florida. When she was 10 years old, she officially became a Texan when her family moved to Bayview. She graduated from Webster High School in 1950.
That same year, she married her soulmate, E.Y. King, with whom she spent the next 72 years, before succumbing to a decade long battle against Alzheimer’s.
Betty Joyce is survived by her husband, E.Y. King, her sister, Pat Malone, her two children, Bill King and Karen King Rivas, and six grandchildren, Emily, Jonathan, Rebecca, Andrea, Theo and Faith. She has five great grandchildren - Ben, Jack, Evie, Elle and Opal. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Lillie Pearl and Joe Hogan.
Betty Joyce spent most of her life as a full-time, devoted wife, mother and grandmother but later in life she became a proficient, self-educated accountant and kept books for several family enterprises. She loved math, games and puzzles, especially jig-saw puzzles. She was an accomplished seamstress and master of Southern comfort food.
In the 1960s she and her husband started a couples’ Sunday School class that grew to over 100 families. The members of that class became her extended family and remain life-long friends today.
But she was best known as an incredible caregiver for both friends and family. She was always there during hospital visits, helping out with meals, and being a mentor and friend to younger mothers and wives. She was a steady, calm voice in crisis, always there with a gentle touch and a kind word. She was a true nurturer and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for her loved ones. Her spirit will be sorely missed but never forgotten by those who she loved and who loved her.
