One of my fondest memories of Mr. Durham was the first day of 7th Grade Texas History @ Jackson Jr. High in 1967.  We were in the shacks in back of the school.  We came into the class, the lights were off and we were all sitting there waiting for Mr. Durham.  Suddenly, he appeared at the door and as he turned on the lights he said, "Let there be light...and there was!"  I actually have many fond memories of Mr. Durham.  He helped me through problems that I had with my 8th grade American History teacher who was cheating me and other students out of our grades by failing us when we actually made A's because she didn't like us for whatever reason.  He would check my work every day before I went to her class because she would grade our papers and take them back so we had no proof of our work.  She even accused me of talking when it was the girl in front of me and the girl even said that it wasn't me talking, that it was her, but she was one of  that teacher's favorites, so I got the blame.  When I had to take the class in summer school, I once again had Mr. Durham as my teacher, which made me so very happy.   I always finished the work ahead of the others and Mr. Durham had me help him grade the papers.  With Mr. Durham's help along with my 8th Grade Science teacher (Mr. Gilbert) and the Principle, when the next school year started, that teacher was no longer there.  She had been forced to retire. He was such a sweet and loving person.  Even my husband had him for 8th Grade American History and thought he was one of the best teachers @ Jackson.    The last time I saw him, he had been moved into the main building and was teaching 8th Grade American History.   After I was out of high school, I went to visit him and he introduced me to his class.  He will always be my very favorite teacher.  I was so sad to hear that he had passed away, that I cried.  I will always carry him in my heart.

Knew Billy Jack in Robstown and all those memories are so good.  My prayers go out to all you and your family.

To the family of Papaw, what great sadness to learn of this today. It is amazing to have a life long impact and lasting memory of such a great person and family.  Thank you for those years. I will always remember Papaw's boisterous laugh, game days, and cigars. Those days are gone but not forgotten. My deepest condolences...but a heartfelt celebration of life for Papaw and his accomplishments.

I remember Billy Jack from Robstown and he and Mickey Jennings used to get in big discussions with my brother Clayton Cates and others.  He was a delight to know and I remember him well. He was my 8th grade history teacher at Jackson Middle School.  I did enjoy being in his class.  I learned a lot about history.  I also remember he telling us not to hide our light under a bushel, that really stuck with me as I was real shy and after that I would participate in his class.  He was a good teacher with a bigger than life personality.  He made learning fun. I am sorry for your loss.  My prayers are with the family.

Mrs. Durham, this is Janice Jones, a former co worker. It was always pleasant being in your company. May God continue to bless, keep, and sustain you and your family. I have had the experience of losing a spouse. It seemed so unfair to have been in that position. You will have lonely days and nights, but please believe me when I tell you that, "Weeping may endure for a night, but JOY comes in the morning." Your morning is nigh. Trust in God , and He WILL see you through.

Mr. Durham was a great teacher and very memorable person and his legacy lives on not only in his children and grandchildren, but in the many, many students in whose lives he touched.
My brother and I both had him as a teacher at Jackson Middle School, and my brother would regale the family around the dinner table with tales of Mr. Durham's tales and quotes including the famous.."That's a joke..Don't tell your mother"
   His quotes, lessons, and passion for life live on in our family 40 years later...Thank You Mr. Durham and God bless your soul and your family!

Mr Durham was my hr teacher for 3 yrs at Jackson Jr High 71-74. Famous quotes " thats a joke dont tell your mother"  he will be missed

It seems only yesterday that we were dorm mates at the U. of T. in Austin for a couple of years.  Time does fly and there are many miles between us, but we always remember our time in Houston and the bridge games we shared.   We will miss him and know you will too.
