

Sonny was born August 14, 1928 in Humble Texas. He began his professional life early in the oil patch as a roustabout to fund his college education at the University of Texas as a Petroleum Engineer. In 1952 he hired on at Sun Oil Company and married Frances Ruth Hornback. He served in a variety of production posts in Texas and Mississippi. In 1958 he moved his family to Venezuela where he helped pioneer their oil industry. Sonny was transferred to Philadelphia in 1970 with increasing responsibilities with Sun. His last assignment culminated in the development of the the largest production platform in the North Sea (Balmoral Field). Throughout his career he continued his quest for knowledge earning advanced degrees at Columbia and Harvard Universities. He retired from Sun Oil in 1986 after 34 years of service and moved to Galveston Bay.
Sonny and Barbara (Bobbie) Oliver Martin married in 2002 after having both lost their spouses.
Their families were close friends while living in Venezuela and had kept in touch throughout the years. It was a blessing to have lived his remaining years with Bobbie at his side.
His love of god, family and country along with his generosity will be missed by all those he touched. Sonny was preceded in death by his by parents William and Ida Hornback, wife Frances Hornback, 1 sister and 2 brothers. He is survived by his wife Bobbie Hornback, 3 daughters, 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and extended family.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 AM Friday, February 23, 2018 at Seabrook United Methodist Church. In Lieu of flowers please send donations to Shriners Hospital, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Seabrook United Methodist Church.
