Born on May 12, 1953, in Sherman, Texas, Mack was the son of Lois and Will T. Lunsford. He grew up in South Houston, Texas, where he attended South Houston High School.
Throughout his life, Mack dedicated himself to maintenance work and was known for his resourcefulness and ability to fix just about anything. He had a lifelong love for cars and trucks—especially red trucks—and enjoyed watching old Western movies. Music was another passion of his, particularly blues and Southern rock. Some of his favorite artists included Stevie Ray Vaughan, Cusco, Swamp Cabbage, and Linda Ronstadt.
Mack and his former wife, Barbara Pursley made their home in Pasadena, Texas, where they began their family. They welcomed their son, Chris, on October 16, 1974, and their daughter, Kimberly, on May 1, 1976, who sadly passed away the following month. Their daughter Rebecca was born on July 20, 1978. Mack spent many years raising his children, Chris and Becky, in Pasadena.
In 1996, Mack moved to Jacksonville, Florida. He began working at the Pace Center for Girls in 1999, where he remained until his retirement in 2017. Known affectionately as “Mr. Mack,” he wore many hats—handling maintenance and even serving lunch to the girls. He was a dependable presence who formed strong bonds with colleagues and earned their respect through his hard work and good humor.
After suffering a stroke in 2017, Mack returned to Pasadena to be closer to family. During this time, his brother Leonard visited him regularly. Mack spent his final years under the care of The Reserve at Pasadena, where he was known as Mr. David.
Mack will be remembered for his funny and sarcastic sense of humor. He had a knack for lighthearted teasing that endeared him to those around him. He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures—fishing, sitting outside watching birds and squirrels, and spending time with his beloved adopted dog, Trouble.
Mack is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Lunsford, and his son, Chris Lunsford, along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter,
Kimberly May Lunsford; his parents, Lois and Will T. Lunsford; his sisters, Frances Walker and Brenda Haynes; his brother, Leonard Lunsford; and his former wife, Barbara Pursley.
David’s legacy is one of resilience, humor, and kindness. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, and his memory will bring comfort to those who loved him.
The family would like to give special thanks to Jessica "Jess" Morgan and Yaya at The Reserve at Pasadena for the care and kindness they showed to Mack during his time there.
