On December 21, 2022 David Eugene White, age 84, devoted husband of Mary White, passed away peacefully at home in his favorite spot overlooking the lake with his family by his side. He was joyfully greeted by a choir of angels who escorted him to the loving arms of his Lord and Savior. While we mourn the loss of his warm smile and charismatic personality, we celebrate the incredible life he lived.
David was born on July 7,1938 in Poughkeepsie, New York to Dr. and Mrs. Albert White. He entered the Navy after high school where he sang in the Naval Choir. After graduating from Roanoke College, he started his first job with IBM where he stayed for 10 years. While working abroad for Bell Helicopters he had to flee Iran during the revolution. His entrepreneurial panache then led him to business ownership of popcorn shops in Del Rio, Texas. Venturing into the hospitality industry, he managed with the La Quinta chain of hotels and retired at the age of 61 with the Sisters of Charity Clear Lake. The common thread in David’s career choices was his love of meeting people and helping them in any way he could. He was an extremely generous and thoughtful man who would frequently pen handwritten notes, send texts or emails, or call family and friends to share something amusing, newsworthy, or lift someones’ spirits when needed. You could always count on an enthusiastic greeting from him, including a big kiss on the lips to seal the deal. He touched the hearts of so many and will always be remembered for how he made them feel.
He had a zest for life, competitive spirit and athleticism that played out on the soccer field, as a marathon runner and later as an avid tennis player. For many, many years, he met every Saturday with his tennis group to play a few matches then gather for pizza and fellowship. Knee replacements and various other chronic conditions couldn’t dampen his “Love” of the game. He played on. He marveled at the men and women on the pro tennis circuit and traveled every year to meet friends in Cincinnati for the US Open. We imagine him stepping onto a Heavenly court in his glorified body with a racquet in hand and sparkle in his eyes.
David was a very active member in his Bayfront Condominium Association where he and Mary have lived for 22 years. He loved living on the water and the close relationships of his neighbors in this small community. They affectionately called him “The Mayor of Bayfront”. While David embraced an active lifestyle, he also celebrated the gift of an ordinary day with Mary in the kitchen, his newspaper in front of him, his beloved late dog Gracie by his side, then his newest love Mickey. He regularly attended church services and Alpha Omega Sunday school class at the University Baptist Church in Clear Lake. David’s faith guided his life so we know when the Lord called him, he heard His familiar voice and peacefully followed Him home.
David and Mary traveled frequently to the warm, sunny beaches of Mexico, multiple cruises to various locations and trips to Alaska to visit the family of his late brother Richard “Dick” White. David delighted not only in the destination but in the journey of their adventures and always took the time to get to know the people he met along the way, including many in the service industry. He always ended each trip with a few more stories to tell and more folks to add to his “distribution list”. His love of music from an early age carried over to a great appreciation and supporter of the Houston Symphony. He and Mary were season tickets holders for years and always looked forward to their special evenings attending the concerts and enjoying every magical, musical experience.
David’s Heavenly reunion includes his parents, Albert and Dorothy White, his son David Gregory “Greg” White and his brother Richard “Dick” White, along with numerous friends and family who joyfully welcomed him home. He is survived by Mary, his adoring wife of 22 years. Together they built a life they loved including children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and so many others who they welcomed into their hearts. He loved his own in this world and he loved them until the end. He leaves a legacy of love that we will carry in our hearts forever.
David’s life will be celebrated on Thursday, January 26th at University Baptist Church Clear Lake 16106 Middlebrook Dr. at 10:00 am. Reception to follow at Tommy’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar.
