

Debi was true Texan born in Dallas on February 22, 1956. Debi grew up in Pasadena and graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in 1974. While at Sam Rayburn Debi was Twirler and a master of the baton winning many awards. After Highschool, Debi was working when she met Kelly Whalen, the love of her life. In 1983 Debi and Kelly were married and they enjoyed 41 years of happiness until Kelly’s passing in 2024.
Debi was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and accomplished business professional. Debi's generosity, love and kindness had an impact on all the people she interacted with over the years. Debi had many friendships, lasting over 40 years and was a loyal and witty friend who will be deeply missed.
Debi worked at various large corporations as an administrative assistant throughout her career, but her true passion was education. She operated a licensed in-home childcare for over ten years, serving as both a caregiver and trusted companion to the families. Debi’s home was a place of joy, where she taught children to be kind, curious and creative. Debi was a Member of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society at San Jacinto Community College where she earned associate’s degree. After receiving her degree, Debi began her teaching career with Tegeler Career Center and was awarded Child Care Teacher of the Year in 2004. Known for an inspiring and patient teaching style, she later transitioned into the role of Assistant Director where she provided steady compassionate leadership for the entire school and community. She worked as a dedicated Family Development Worker at Avance Houston Inc. She was deeply committed to empowering and uplifting families; she assisted teen mothers in acquiring assistance with social services. Her kindness and generous spirit made her a beacon of hope for many, and her dedication to helping others was a true testament to her character.
Outside of her work, Debi loved watching the Houston Texans, Houston Astros and the Little League Pearland baseball. Debi loved the time spent with her family and was known for her decorating skills for each holiday. Debi’s legacy is one of love and family and she will be deeply missed.
Debi is preceded in death by her parents William J. Saxton and Eloise Saxton and a daughter Rebecca and son Kelly. Debi is survived by her two sons William J. Whalen, Kelly Whalen II (Jamie), and close family member, Jacob Terry (Carly); sister Ann Saxton; and eight grandchildren: Ethan, Riley, Orion, Konor, Harper, K.J., Carly, and Kimber. Debi leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and family friends.
A Visitation will be held on October 4th from 1:00 to 2:00pm at Forest Park East Funeral Home and Cemetery.
A Memorial Service will be held from 2:00 to 3:00pm followed by a Committal Ceremony at 3:30.
A Reception will be held from 3:30 to 5:00 at Forest Park East Funeral Home and Cemetery Reception Hall located at 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas 77598.
The family extends a welcome to all those who knew Debi and wish to celebrate her life.
