It is with deep sorrow that our family announces the passing of our beloved father, Dewey Herman Mobley, on June 5, 2025. At his home of 57 years, surrounded by family and caregivers, he peacefully departed this world and entered the arms of his Creator. Although he loved life and took care of himself to enjoy 90 healthy years, he often said he did not fear death, as he believed it was not an end—but a new beginning.
Born on January 31, 1935, in Cedar Hill, Texas, Herman was the adored son of Jeanie Melvin and Ollie Mae Mobley. He attended a small, multi-grade classroom school and later graduated summa cum laude before heading to the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. After college graduation, he returned to his hometown and was introduced to a beautiful woman who would capture his heart—Judy Kimrey. They married in 1963 and soon after moved to the Clear Lake area of Houston, Texas.
Herman enjoyed two deeply fulfilling careers. His first spanned 30 years at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where he played a role in history-making moments such as the first Moon landing and the Space Shuttle program. In his later years at NASA, Herman began to pursue his lifelong passion for educating others about health and nutrition. With the unwavering support of his devoted wife Judy, he opened Tri-Health Foods, Inc. in 1982. There, he shared his knowledge with multiple generations of customers over 37 years.
To us, Herman was “Dad”—a caring father to Kathy and Gary. Growing up, he could be found woodworking in the garage, fixing anything that broke, reading to educate himself, offering advice and wisdom, or simply giving a hug when needed.
Herman is survived by his loving wife Judy Mobley; his children Kathy Shaffer (Tim Shaffer) and Gary Mobley; his sister Eva Roberts; and many nieces and nephews who will dearly miss him. As “Granddad,” he was a proud and generous soul to his grandchildren: Shane Popson (Ro Byrd), Brendan Popson (Tamsin Chen), and Regan Popson.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents Jeanie Melvin and Ollie Mae Mobley, his sister Doris Ann Norman, his brother Leon Mobley and sister-in-law Lldalee Springer, his brother Lynn Mobley; and brother-in-law Ben Roberts. As well as many close family members and friends.
A service to honor and celebrate Herman’s life will be held on July 5, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Park East Funeral Home, 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas 77598. Light refreshments and Herman’s favorite dessert will be served following the service. He will be laid to rest in his birthplace at Little Bethel Cemetery on July 7.
