Floyd enlisted in the Navy in February 1945 at the age of 17. He served in the US Navy on active duty and in the reserves before being honorably discharged as an Ensign in December 1953.
Floyd attended SMU on the GI bill and earned his BBA in statistics. He went on to work as an auditor for Wausau insurance where he travelled extensively across the southeastern United States. He earned a pilot’s license and flew his private plane to service clients located in rural areas.
After moving to Houston, Floyd joined Willow Meadows Baptist Church where he remained an active member until his death. It was at Willow Meadows where Floyd met Elva and everything changed. Floyd and Elva married on May 24, 1980. Floyd went from being a bachelor and only child to being a welcome member of a large family. He readily took on the role of Papa to one grandson and eventually to 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. The youngest great grandson was born a few weeks ago, and in honor of Floyd, carries his surname as his middle name.
Floyd actively supported his grandchildren and great-grandchildren by attending school programs, sports games, dances, concerts and other activities.
Floyd enjoyed various activities and organizations including the American Legion, Elks Club, the Optimist Club, OTRA (On The Road Again), Shriners, and LLL (Live Long and Like It). He also shared his love of traveling with Elva and they organized many group vacations throughout the US and abroad.
Floyd possessed a mind sharp enough to master statistics and manners warm enough to win a place in the hearts of those with whom he visited. Black coffee and a clean plate were the signatures of his visits…. and happiness too.
Floyd was preceded in death by his wife Elva Wilson and his grandson Rhett Kruse. He is survived by his daughter Lynn Goodnight (Tom), daughter Linda English (Ken), son Harry Sparwasser (Robin), and daughter Janice Kruse (Sam); his grandchildren, James Goodnight, Katherine Appleget (Josh), Mark Goodnight (Emily), Brad English (Jill), Kevin English (Linda), Keith English (Brittany), Cory Sparwasser (Stacey), Kayla Sparwasser, Kyle Sparwasser (Tori), Natalie Paine (Stephen), and Tyler Kruse; his great grandchildren, Matilda Appleget, Madelynn Appleget, Lincoln Appleget, Beatrice Appleget, Beckett Goodnight, Dawson Goodnight, Ethan English, Kinley English, Stephen Carter, Bryan English, Laila English, Jackson Sparwasser, Kensie Sparwasser, Emma Sparwasser, Jameson Sparwasser, Rhett Paine, and Jennings Wilson Paine.
A funeral service will be conducted at Willow Meadows Baptist Church chapel, 4300 West Bellfort in Houston on Monday, February 17th at 11am with a visitation just prior. Immediately following the service, all are invited to join the family for lunch in the church fellowship hall.
