August 30, 1926-December 31, 2012
G.P Howard was born in Shreveport Louisiana to John Drew & Beulah Howard on August 30, 1926. The fifth child behind Marie, Helen, Jack & Pauline. His mother passed away at child birth with the last child, Joann when Gene was only five years old. Born during the depression years, his family moved around the southwest searching for employment & living very meagerly until his dad passed away when he was16. His loving grandmother helped raise him through all the moves until he joined the U.S. Navy at the ripe age of 15. Enlisting in the Navy, he soon was shipped out to the South Pacific Theatre where he fought in battles such as The Quadal Canal. He was also involved in the Bikini A bomb test & Operation Crossroads. His name is forever memorialized at the Nimitz museum for his service to our country on the Jamestown fighting vessel.
It was after World War II, during a leave in the San Diego area, that he spotted a beautiful Mary Jane Scheshey walking on the railway station boarding a train. His heart knew immediately- she was the love of his life & his pursuit for her hand in marriage quickly evolved into a 64 year marriage. After discharge from the service, he moved back to the Houston area to begin his 39 year career with SouthWestern Bell Telephone Company. He worked hard and moved up the ladder to end his career as a cable repair supervisor. It was here that he made many lasting friendships that would impact his life. Moving Mary Jane down from Omaha, Nebraska they settled in the Heights area until they purchased their home at 114 Alastair, Pasadena, Texas in the early 50’s. It was here they delivered their first son, John Drew Howard in 1951 and second son, Jack McKinley Howard in 1953. Gene Paul was a wonderful father to his sons & taught them all the manly skills of hunting, fishing & creating inventions that his boys remember clearly to this day.
Gene Paul Howard also became a grandfather through his son, Jack & wife Jan Howard of League City, Texas. Lacy Michele Howard & Jaclyn Louise Howard added to the fun & laughter of the family in the last 25 years of his life. He was a wonderful grandfather who told tales & made jokes that will last in our memories forever.
Gene Paul Howard will be remembered always for his quick wit & humorous antics that entertained all around. His story telling about WWII , life as a child & life’s crazy moments are treasures the family will always have as they move forward to mourn his passing.
We celebrate your life-G.P. & will always remember…..
