Guy was born on August 23, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois, to Guy Marvin Mace Sr. and Hazel Mace, who were married for over 50 years. At just 17 years old, with his mother’s signature, Guy enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He completed basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, and proudly served his country during World War II.
After returning home, Guy’s life forever changed when he met Carmela Rose Cusumano, the love of his life, while working at Stanford Transformers Corporation. They married on August 22, 1948, at just 21 years old. That night, they walked three blocks home from their wedding hand in hand, Carmela lifting her dress as they ran across the street, one magical moment in time. Guy loved telling that story. They shared 70 beautiful years of marriage, marked by deep faith, laughter, adventure, and unwavering devotion. Their love was rare and visible to all who knew them.
Together, Guy and Carmela built a life rooted in Catholic faith and family, raising their two children, Kathleen Anne and Guy Marvin Mace III. Guy lived for his wife and children, and his family was always his greatest joy.
During his time in Chicago, before moving to Texas, Guy was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, alongside his father-in-law, Antonio, and also volunteered at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Guy was a graduate of Lee College. He was a hardworking and disciplined man, Guy worked for Brown & Root Corporation until retiring at age 62. Even in retirement, he stayed active. Working out three days a week for 35+ years at the La Porte Recreation Center. He was also devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church here in La Porte, Texas.
Guy had a love for adventure and the simple joys of life. He cherished road trips across the United States with his wife, traveling to Hawaii, Cabo San Lucas, and Europe. And also spending time with his ever-growing family. He taught his children and grandchildren how to swim and loved animals deeply. He even once rescued a dog from a burning apartment building. Until recently he fed all the neighborhood cats. He adored his dog, Poocharino. Poochie or Lucky for short.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carmela Rose Cusumano Mace; his parents, Guy Sr. and Hazel Mace; and his sisters, Shirley and Mary Lou. Guy was the last living member of his generation, a quiet honor he carried with grace.
He is survived by his daughter Kathleen Anne Giddens and husband Albert Lee Giddens, and their children and spouses: Dina and Bruce Harlan; Melissa and Ashley Stewart; Jerry and McKenzie Giddens; Nicole and Trey McHale; Cassy and John Sandobal; Albert Lee Giddens Jr. and Jennifer; and Brittany and Harvey Burns. He is also survived by his son Guy Marvin Mace III, and his children Guy Marvin Mace IV and Joshua Mace.
Guy leaves behind a cherished legacy through his great-grandchildren and their spouses: Alexis and Cody Lenz; Haley and Nace Sweeney; Ashlyn and Stephen Keller; Brookelyn and Brett Williams; Parker Stewart; Arika Harlan; Lyla, Ella, Crew, Ivy, and Eve Giddens. He was blessed to know his great-great-grandchildren Luke Lenz, Blakely Williams, Serena Keller, Lucy Lenz, and two great-great-grandsons on the way.
More than anything, Guy will be remembered for a love that never faded. A devotion to Carmela that endured every season of life. He wore his wedding ring with pride and honor until his last days. Their story remains a reminder that true love exists, grows stronger with time, and lives on through the family they created together.
