She attended Dickinson High School, where she was in the band. She played percussion and was one of the three twirlers in the band. After graduating Dickinson High School, she attended Texas State College for Women (TWU) for a semester. But, returned to Dickinson where she became a typist/secretary for Humble Oil (Exxon) at the Bacliff, TX office.
There she met Tom Simmons whom she fell in love with and eventually married. Together they had 3 boys (Chris, Bryan and Mark) that they raised there in Dickinson. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church in that community. It was there in Dickinson, at Howell Memorial Methodist church, she was baptized and married.
Jacque enjoyed painting using oils, water colors and charcoals. Her paintings ranged from still life of flowers and landscapes, to shrimp boats and sail boats, and portraits of her family. She also painted bird houses that Tom made from scraps of wood and other building materials. After Tom retired, they would sell those at a booth they had at Market Days in Wimberley, TX. Tom said about his life, “I build things and Jacque makes them beautiful”.
Jacque was active in her church and the community of Dickinson. She helped serve the Dickinson Rotary group’s weekly dinners. And was a member of the civic group Weed n Wish Garden Club. Later in life, she joined a women’s tennis club in Dickinson and competed in events in and around Houston. She enjoyed very much the friendships she established with those ladies in her tennis group.
She considered her life to be a very happy and fulfilling one. Despite acquiring Alzheimer’s toward the end of her life, she was able to provide friends and loved ones her beautiful smile. While she still had her faculties, her two sons who live in California, wanted her to move there so she would be closer to them. Jacque adamantly opposed that suggestion and told them “I’m a Texan forever. No way am I moving from here (Texas)!” She is survived by two sons, the families of all three of her sons, and numerous friends.
