John was born on January 21, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York and resided in the Houston, Texas area for 32 years. John was a veteran of the US Army who proudly served his country from 1966 through 1968. John spent his early years as a bricklayer, truck driver and truly found his calling in the demolition industry. John started as a laborer in the 1970’s and rose through the ranks until he joined Olshan Demolishing as Vice President in 1990. In 1994 John went into partnership with D.H. Griffin and David Griffin, Jr. to form D.H. Griffin of Texas where John served 27 years as President. John was very loved by his employees at D.H. Griffin of Texas as he spent many hours getting to know them and their families. John also had been active with the National Demolition Association previously serving on the board of directors.
As a resident of the Gulf Coast John and Dorothy enjoyed boating and taking long trips on their boat from South Padre, Texas to San Destin, Florida motoring up and down the coast with their beloved Dachshunds. John was an avid angler who enjoyed sitting on a boat with his line in the water and a fish on the hook.
John started a veterans organization called the Heroes for Freedom Foundation. He felt the need to help returning veterans and first responders being a veteran himself. The Foundation held an annual fishing tournament and golf tournament for veterans and first responders. The Foundation also donated funds to veterans during the Christmas Holidays. The Foundation was a labor of love for John who worked tirelessly for those who served.
