Lois graduated from Wellsville High School in Wellsville, Ohio where she was a member of the Glee Club and a cheerleader. She later attended Morehead College and the University of Kentucky before becoming a Cadet Nurse during WWII and graduating from the Good Samaritan Hospital Nursing School in Lexington, Kentucky as RN.
While in nursing school she met and married the love of her life, Dewey Campbell. They were married September 18, 1946 in Olympia, Kentucky. As a young married couple, Lois and Dewey lived in Winchester, Kentucky, Del Rio, Texas, Kansas City, Missouri, Dayton, Ohio and Wellsville, Ohio before settling down in Houston, Texas in 1964.
Lois supported the family by working as a surgical scrub nurse while Dewey completed osteopathic medical school and surgical residency. She later worked as a nurse at Lakeside Hospital in Kansas City, and Yale Hospital, Golden Age Nursing Home, St Joseph’s Hospital, and El Centro Adult Day Care, all in Houston. She was honored to be appointed by the Mayor of Houston to the Harris County Area Agency on Aging to assess quality of care in area nursing homes.
Besides Lois’ service to others as a nurse, nurturing and mothering her own family was her primary focus. She was a loving, involved, practical, compassionate wife, mother and grandmother who expected her children and grandchildren to do their best and do what is right at all times. Essential to their childhoods and as part of their daily routines, Lois and Dewey took their kids to the family farm in Pearland to care for their horses. Lois was constantly sewing dance costumes and attending sporting events, dance recitals, horse shows, rodeos, music lessons and many other family and community activities. Lois was especially proud to attend her children’s and grandchildren’s school and military graduations. She took great joy in her children and grandchildren and was an honorary mother and grandmother figure to many special people in her life.
Lois was a past member of the Sam Houston Chapter DAR, the Houston Ballet Guild, and the Heather and Thistle Society. She was a past president of the Auxiliary to the Texas Osteopathic Association, and a longtime platelet donor at MD Anderson. She was a past member of Glenbrook United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, and more recently attended the First Methodist Church of Pearland and was an active member and good neighbor of her community of Bella Vita in Pearland, Texas.
Lois loved life! She loved God, loved her family and friends, loved helping others and loved being an American. Among her favorite activities were travel, playing bridge with friends, and she very rarely missed watching her beloved Texans and Astros play! Lois particularly loved family adventures at their ranch in Gonzales, Texas. She loved animals, especially her border collie Bonnie and her lap buddy Bentley. Lois loved and greatly appreciated her caregivers Bonnie and Joey Burden, Christina Vasquez, Gina Jones and Edy Rocha.
When asked how she wanted to be remembered, she replied: “I believe in our God and love the family He gave me. I was born in the USA, so I’ve always considered myself BLESSED and am THANKFUL.”
Services will be held in Lois’ honor at Forest Park East Cemetery, 21620 Gulf Fwy Webster, Texas this Saturday, September 1st with family visitation beginning at 2pm.
