On November 30, 1967, Maria married Michael P. Huffman, beginning a life rooted in love, partnership, and dedication. That same year, she immigrated to the United States, embracing her new home while continuing to honor her German heritage and her faith.
Family was the center of Maria’s life. She took great pride in her home and had a natural way of making people feel welcome, often giving others the feeling of home simply by being herself. Celebrations mattered deeply to her, from holidays and milestones to everyday moments shared together. She raised her sons with devotion and love and later played a central role in raising her granddaughters, shaping their lives through her constant presence, guidance, and care. Her German traditions remained an important part of who she was, and she carried them proudly throughout her life.
Maria balanced her roles as both a career woman and a devoted homemaker. In 1981, she became a real estate agent and proudly served the people of Houston, finding fulfillment in helping others and guiding families toward homeownership while continuing to care deeply for her own family.
Her faith was a steady presence throughout her life. Maria was baptized at birth at Kreiskrankenhaus Burglengenfeld and married in the Catholic faith at St. Vitus Catholic Church. Her faith shaped her values and guided the way she lived and loved.
Maria was deeply proud of the family she built. Being a mother meant everything to her, and she took just as much joy in being a grandmother and later a great-grandmother. She treasured time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be remembered as a warm, genuine person with a beautiful, infectious laugh that so many loved. To many, she was Omi, and her love and presence will continue through the family she held so close.
She is survived by her loving husband, Michael P. Huffman; her son, Stuart Huffman; her granddaughters, Shelby Huffman; Sydney Huffman and her husband, Ryan Maxwell; Samantha Johnson; Sofie Huffman and her husband, Benjamin Ponce; and Rylee Huffman; her grandsons, Carson Huffman and Evan Huffman; her great-grandchildren, Delilah Ponce and Declan Maxwell; her nephew, Willi Kruschwitz and his wife, Ruth; her nephew, Hans Gerstmeier and his wife, Stephanie; her nieces, Gertrud Seiler, Jutta Seiler, Karin Fischer and her husband, Magnus, and Liselotte Teufel; her great-nieces, Katharina Kruschwitz and Johanna Kruschwitz; and her great-nephew, Ludwig Kruschwitz.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Johann and Sofie Gerstmeier; her brother, Hans “Bubi” Gerstmeier; her sister, Elisabeth Kruschwitz; her son, Michael J. Huffman; her daughter-in-law, Johanna Huffman; and her niece, Elisabeth “Lilo” Teufel.
