Melvin Ray Scott, 95, of Kemah, Texas, finished his earthly race on November 4, 2024. He was a country boy born in Speegleville, Texas, on November 27, 1928, to David Rush and Ida Prater Scott. His childhood was filled with growing cotton, picking cotton, and helping his parents with their family garden and milk cows.
He joined his brother, Leslie, in Galveston after high school where he became employed and then met his future bride, Shirley Ruth Hinton at a church beach party. They were married for 70 years.
Melvin worked for Union Carbide as a pipefitter for 40 years, retiring in 1994.
His passions were gardening, travel, jewelry making, carpentry, repair of autos or any item that ceased working, and fishing. His work ethic is unsurpassed, in our opinion. We doubt anyone could make a better deal on a ‘new’ car or any other purchase.
Melvin was a deacon in the Church of God, AWA, and always ready to pitch in when someone had a need.
As a Dad and family provider, he had lush gardens that provided enough food for our family during the growing season, and the rest was canned or frozen by Shirley. He tended many bee hives, and the honey they produced provided enough sweetener that we bought little sugar. We had a milk cow who provided us with three calves that provided sustenance for several years. Our freezer was full of fish Dad caught . . . flounder, red fish, snapper, trout, and more.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, in 2018 and a grandson, Timothy Scott Smith. Melvin was the youngest of four and the last survivor of his siblings, Leslie Scott, Dennis Scott, and Mary Scott Sparks.
His survivors are his three children, Susan Scott Smith (Tony), David Ray Scott, and Stuart Dean Scott. Grandchildren include James (Angela), Emily, Matthew, and Jason. Great Grandchildren include Julia, Brandon, and Noah. His Great Great Granddaughter is Cassie.
A visitation for Melvin will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Forest Park East Funeral Home, 21620 Gulf Fwy, Webster, TX 77598.
A funeral service will occur Wednesday, November 13, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, 21620 Gulf Fwy, Webster, TX 77598.
