Robert “Bob” Steve Nouis passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on September 17, 1930, during the Great Depression, Bob’s life was shaped by hard work, determination, and deep love for his family.
He was the sixth of eight children born to Steve and Mary (Habas) Nouis of Morrison County, Minnesota. Bob grew up farming—and at the age of 12 years old he built the family chicken house. He attended a one-room schoolhouse with 32 students spanning grades 1 through 8 and often reminded his children with a grin that he “walked two miles to school every day.”
At the age of 18, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1948 as an aircraft mechanic. On August 8, 1953, he married his longtime sweetheart, Celestine “Sally” Agnes Aschenbrenner. Together, they embraced a life of travel, military service, and raising five children: Jeff, Janet, James, Craig, and Robert, Jr.
After active duty, Bob continued his military career in the National Guard at Ellington Field, working on the flight line maintenance team. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, ultimately retiring as Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) after more than 38 years of combined service in the Air Force and National Guard. Bob additionally worked another 8 years after his retirement as a contractor during the Air Force’s transition from the F-4 Phantom II to the F-16 Fighting Falcon, with assignments that included Germany and Florida’s alert systems.
Bob was a skilled craftsman who loved working with his hands. Woodworking was his passion, and over the years, he built multiple houses, creating spaces where memories were made and shared. He took great pride in building a two-bedroom house by the San Jacinto River, a retreat for his family and friends.
He enjoyed being outdoors, staying active, and always having a project in motion. But when the tools were put down, Bob could always be found at the card table. If there was a card game, he was there—especially for a good poker game. He loved to laugh, have fun, and enjoy life with those around him.
In retirement, Bob remained active in his community, giving his time and talents to St. Augustine Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and American Legion Post 490. In recognition of his years of dedication and craftsmanship, Post 490 honored him by naming their clubroom after him—a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to the spaces he helped shape.
Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 72 years, Sally Nouis; his children Jeff Nouis and wife Marcia, Janet Nouis Lively and husband Mike Lively, Craig Nouis and wife Kathy, Robert Nouis Jr. and forever daughter-n-law Grisell Nouis. His grandchildren include Kevin Lively and wife Courtney, Ryan Strahan, David Nouis, Christopher Nouis and wife Vismaya, Erik Nouis and wife Lauren. Great-grandchildren are James Nouis, Kevin (KJ) Lively Jr., and Korie Lively. He is also survived by his brother Arnold Nouis.
Preceded in death by son James Nouis and his siblings Damon Nouis, Genevieve Kloss, Rita Kloss, Jerome Nouis, Delphine Westlake, and Leroy Nouis.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Lively, Ryan Strahan, David Nouis, Christopher Nouis, Erik Nouis, and James Nouis. Honorary Jr. pallbearers are great-grandchildren KJ Lively and Korie Lively.
Bob was deeply loved and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May God bless his soul, and may his legacy of craftsmanship, humor, and dedication live on.
