

Velma Eason Murphy, age 87 of League City, Texas passed from this earthly life into a heavenly life on May 15, 2014. At the time of her death, she was a resident of The Cottages of League City. Velma was born on September 12, 1926 in Batson, Hardin County, Texas. She was the second born of ten children born to Alfred Eason and Loa Burnett Eason.
She attended Southwestern Assembly of God University in Waxahachie, Texas. She worked as a telephone operator in Baytown, Texas during the 1947 Texas City explosion. She later worked various jobs including cashier at Lacks in Dickinson and at Thrifty’s in League City. She also drove a bus for Clear Creek Independent School District.
On July 17, 1948 Velma Eason married Cecil Arvil Murphy, son of Jesse and Addie Murphy. Velma and Cecil’s home was the family “gathering place”. Murphy and Eason family members from near and far were always welcomed to play games and visit over a good pot of coffee. She enjoyed sewing and cooking good Southern food while dirtying every pot in the kitchen (according to her children who had to wash them afterwards). There was always something on the stove, especially for the grandchildren. Before entering the convalescence home, Mrs. Murphy attended the Turning Point Church of League City.
Velma is survived by her beloved children and their spouses – Cecil Murphy, Jr. of Rochester, Minnesota; Teri and Walter Clemishaw of League City, Texas; Greg and Kari Murphy of Friendswood, Texas; Dixie and Rusty Brandon of Spicewood, Texas; and Glenn and Kris Murphy of League City, Texas. She leaves eleven grandchildren with spouses – Boyd and Karen Clemishaw of Kemah; Carl Clemishaw of Minot, North Dakota; Aaron and April Brandon of Friendswood, Texas; Justin and Cynthia Brandon of League City; Kristen and Matt Brumley of Texas City, Texas; Sam Murphy of Rochester, Minnesota; Dustin and Amanda Murphy of Webster, Texas; Kelsey and Stephen Harper of Denton, Texas; Daniel Murphy of Friendswood, Texas; Michael Murphy of League City, Texas; and Jacob Murphy of League City. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren. Five siblings – Vivian Coleman of Wimberly, Texas; Sophie Chasteen of Palestine, Texas; Faye Brooks of Mayfield, Kentucky; Edwin Eason of Marietta, Texas; and Connie Strban of Crockett, Texas, survive Velma. Many in-laws, nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends will also miss her.
Velma is preceded in death by her husband, Cecil (March 15, 2008). Her parents – Alfred (January 11, 1975) and Loa (November 11, 1992); her siblings – Raymond Eason (March 25, 2001), Esther Murphy (January 27, 2014), James Eason (May 8, 1947), and Nathan Eason (March 2, 1999); and her daughter-in-law, Debora Moore Murphy (October 5, 2005) also precede her in death.
The celebration of Velma Eason Murphy’s life will be held at Forest Park East Funeral Home in Webster, Texas on Monday, May 19 at 10:00 am followed by a burial at Forest Park East Cemetery. Visitation with the family, also at Forest Park East Funeral Home will be on Sunday, May 18 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
