Polly Wilson: “I was born on March 13, 1925 in Sherman, Texas to Henry and Magnola Bower. Being the first child born to them, they were very pleased that I seemed to be a healthy baby. They had four other children, 2 more girls and 2 boys. My dad had five children by a previous marriage that ended soon after their fifth child was born because of the death of his wife.”
Polly Wilson passed away at Regent Care Center in League City, TX at 8 pm on November 9, 2014. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill, her first born son, Ron, her parents, and all of her siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia, her grandson, Roy and his wife Ashley, along with their first preborn son, William. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and one great-great niece.
After her dad died from a one-car accident in 1938, her family moved to Ft. Worth, TX. Since her mother needed to go to work, Polly became the “mother” to her sisters and brothers while attending school. She met her husband while in Ft. Worth. They married on July 18, 1943 shortly before he shipped out with the Marine Corps. She followed him to California where she stayed while he was overseas. They moved back to Ft. Worth in 1948. Polly continue to follow her husband to West Lake, LA and Beaumont, TX. They moved to Texas City in July, 1957.
She was a member of Heights Baptist Church and then First Baptist Church on Ninth Avenue in Texas City. While her children were in junior high and upper elementary, she decided to help supplement the family income by working at JC Penny Store in downtown Texas City. After a few years she returned to the job she loved the best- being a mother and homemaker. While her daughter was in junior and senior high, she made most of her dresses and formals: she also made some formal clothing for her daughter’s friends. One time, her daughter needed a formal, so they went shopping; they ended up at a very expensive store in Houston which, of course had that perfect dress. Polly pulled out some paper, sketched it, made her own pattern, and made the dress which was sewn much better than the original. After her children had graduated, she went to work for the credit bureau in Texas City and then in Galveston. She took and gave credit reports and was often called on to do repairs on early computers in the office. She retired ten years later to stay at home where she developed her artistic talent. She painted with both oils and acrylics. She was a wonderful cook; a skill that she passed to her son. She enjoyed her gardens both vegetables and ornamental. She made superb jellies, jams and preserves. She even tried her hand making blackberry wine. She volunteered at the Hospice Thrift Shop and the HOST program at Kohfeldt Elementary.
After her grandson was born, she provided care for him during the first year of his life while his mother worked. As he grew, she continued to support him through attending his Little League games, band concerts, school plays, and later theatrical presentations. She was involved in everything that she could possibly do if it involved him.
After her husband retired, she continued her duties in maintaining the perfect home; she was a true Proverbs 31 woman. They were able to add the enjoyable pastime of traveling to their lives.
They went to almost all of the lower 48 states. They missed Oregon and Washington because of a cancelled trip on September 13, 2011 since the planes were not flying yet.
While she was at Regent Care, she developed friendships among the nurses, staff, and CNAs. She never complained about anything and almost always had a smile of her face for any of them. Her family is extremely grateful to them for the excellent care that she received while there. We also appreciate the loving care that she received from AMED Hospice especially the case manager, Lisa, and the CNA, Mariela Garcia who bathed her, dressed her, and changed her linens daily. Her daughter was blessed to have to continuous care givers: Christy Priddy and Kristi Harris.
There will be a memorial service at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Texas City at noon on Friday, November 14, 2014 with the pastor, Dr. Robert Miller, officiating. There will be a private graveside service with Pastor Richard Robeson from First Baptist Church in Dickinson.
In lieu of flowers, send any memorial gifts to First Baptist Church of Texas City.
