Christmas 2010. We always had Mark and Eddie with us over the holidays. It always made them extra special. 


Here are some more pics of my cousin, Marky. He is so missed! One time when he was with us over the Christmas Holiday, I asked him what kind of cake he wanted for his birthday. He said he wanted a flourless cake like his mom used to make him. I did my best!

My Deepest Heartfelt Sympathy Paula, to you and your family.    I only learned today, Feb 26th of Mark's passing.  May happy memories bring a smile to you face.  My heart goes out to you Paula and may Mark Rest in Peace.  


Mark was a wonderful person.  We spent many years at the lake with him. He always showed us something new every year on our rides around Connecticut.  Thanks for the memories. RIP

I am writing this to remember my cousin Marky who I dearly loved.

Some of my earliest memories of Mark were of the holidays at Grandma Robertson’s apartment on Main Street, New Britain. The apartment was on the 3rd or 4th floor with windows that could open enabling us kids to view the people walking past the shops and the movie theater on the sidewalks below.

Marky created a great game where we would form spit balls from paper and try to drop them from the window into the rims of the hats of the unsuspecting persons below. It was great fun that often met with success. When we spent the holiday in Simsbury, Marky would take us kids on a walk somewhere through the woods and it was usually a long hike with lots of stories. Marky was the “ringleader of adventure.”

From Mark's cousin Marlene:
Summers were spent at Lake Bashan in Moodus CT. Mark was a great storyteller. In our younger years at the lake, at night we would all gather on one of the beds and he would tell stories, great stories, and sometimes scary stories. The great part was that we were the characters in the story. By we, I mean Marky, Paula, Sue, Lori, Sandy, and myself. Six cousins that got along great, loved each other, and were blessed to have had Little Rascals-like experiences growing up together.

Mark and Sue were the eldest, but only Mark worked over the summers at the lake. Mark earned money to gas up the “yellow submarine,” his name for our boat that required bailing most mornings before use. We swam most of the day, sun-bathed, and waterskied. Idyllic summers for sure.

Mark continued with his prankster antics. I remembered when he tied fishing string to the outhouse door so he could slowly pull it open as someone was sitting on the “throne.” He did this just so he could see their panicked hand reaching out to close the door. Another time, he put itching powder on the toilet paper. He got such joy from these antics, and I must admit that we did too.

When Mark was old enough to drive, he would take us on nighttime adventure rides down to old cemeteries by the Connecticut River, or along some of the back roads that he knew like the back of his hand. These were kind of Huckleberry Finn adventures.

One time on a dark back road by an old cemetery surrounded by a stone wall, Mark pulled the car over and got out of the car, telling us girls to wait in the car and he would be right back. He proceeded to walk to the stone wall by the cemetery and then screamed and made it look like someone had pulled him over the wall. He got great fun out of scaring us all. Sadly, we were all too scared to get out of the car to see what happened to him, but he soon returned laughing his hearty laugh. He was so delighted to have pulled off this great deception.

From Mark's cousin Marlene:
Marky loved his mom, my Aunt Gladys, and he cared for her until the day she died along with my cousin Paula. Each had their own beautiful way of caring for Aunt Gladys.  Marky always tried to perk up her last days with adventure rides and stops to cafes for donuts and coffee. He also loved the music of that period (especially Jeanette McDonald) and old wholesome classic movies.

After Gladys passed, Marky would spend the holidays with his Kitson cousins in New York. Mark always gave unusual and unique gifts obtained from his travels and explorations. For example, he gave my husband Pat, two feet of chain and a hook that he had found on one of his many walks. He figured that Pat could put them to good use, since Pat was a collector of things as well. I would get very interesting books, and other items, that he had found during his thrift shop treasure hunting.

Mark liked to contribute when he would come for the holidays by making his famous pizza or calzones. When Mark was cooking in the kitchen you WERE NOT to taste anything until the masterpiece was completed. There were consequences for breaking the rules! However, this rule was second to the cardinal rule that one shall not call or visit during the cherished nap time. This time was usually between 2-4 pm, but when we last saw Mark, it appeared to start a bit earlier. A prelude to the naps was always reading a good book, the contents of which he was always willing to share. I loved that!

If you knew Mark, you knew that butter was a staple of his diet, “everything is better with butter” was his mantra. According to Doctor Wallach, butter consumption can keep your brain sharp by providing the cholesterol needed by the brain. I guess he was right because Marky was quite sharp with no signs of mental decline at all.

From my cousin Marlene:
Mark always liked to include us in on his adventures, whether they were frat parties at his college, hanging out with the Connecticut Yankee Bachelors, or visiting his favorite places at the Cape. Mark had a profound respect and love for nature. We would go on adventure rides to see extraordinary sunsets. On a walk, he would notice the beauty of nature, simple things, that most people would just pass by.

Mark shared a cast of characters with us from A-Z. In CT there was Eddie, Fat Tim and Skinny Tim, Eric, and JoAnn.  Each of them adding wonderful memories to our lives as well. Then, from the earliest days at the Cape there was Erica and the “hooligans,” and his friends Judy and Fred, Chopper and Patrick, the Dunkin Donuts coffee crowd, and of course Laura who provided a home for him and his beloved dog, Scar. Mark always included us in his world and our lives were enhanced by this inclusion.

Mark was a man of simple needs. He did not like to have too many possessions, too cumbersome! He did like long walks with Scar, bike rides, his friends and family and listening to radio programs like Coast-to-Coast AM.

From Mark's cousin Marlene:
Marky added such joy and flavor to my life as I was growing up. We last saw him at the lake on September 25, and we had our final adventure ride together, going to the dump to get a sticker for his bike so he could bring his garbage there, and exploring the back roads of Moodus and the surrounding areas.

He was always happy to see us, and just as happy to see us go 😊 He liked his Marky time as well. I am sad that the pandemic circumstances prevent us from gathering to honor him and all that he meant to us, but each of us can honor him in our own way.

This Christmas we are going to watch all his favorite old Christmas movies in his honor. Marky is physically gone, but certainly will never be forgotten or far from our hearts.

Have fun chilling with the Swedes in Heaven, Marky, and we will see you sometime in the future.

I loved sitting on the bus with Mark discussing his latest book or his great deal found at stop and shop. He was a happy soul and will be missed dearly.

I was one of his bus friends going to Provincetown. Since we both liked to sit in the same front seat, we sometimes squabbled over it. But always with a sense of humor... He was definitely one of a kind! It's not the same without him.

Mark will be missed.
I would drive him to PROVINCETOWN most nights on the bus. He had his bus friends that traveled almost every night for his coffee and maybe a package of muffins. 
I will miss him.


I am very sad to be reading this obituary. I met Mark in the early eighties when Mark was dating my mom. Mark was working doing concrete work. He was a hard worker and very sincere. He had a very unique and funny way of describing things. Mark made me smile and became a good friend over the years. We struggled financially back then but Mark was a strong male figure in my life. We shared many fun times fishing, boating and party going. Mark was a friendly sole in this world and I enjoyed the good times!! Good bye friend …God Bless Mark!! Kyle Morse

Since I cannot fit into 2000 characters my memories of my cousin Mark and all that he meant to me, I wrote it out and took a picture of it. Hopefully you will be able to read it to get an idea of how great a person he was.

I'm Susan Markie first oldest cousin his mom Gladys and mine June were sisters and our dads Bob and Joe  brother in laws. We were kids together before our siblings were born. Our families spent summers together at Lake Bashan since we were babies. When Paula Marks sister and my sisters Lori Marlene and Sandra were born we all spent the summers together as one big happy family. That continues to this very day Thanks to Rick Paula
 The larger Swedish family would frequently come for family picnics to the lake and again on Christmas Eve at various relatives homes. Mark was always the joker in the group, he loved to laugh, talk take very long walks, super "adventure" rides, swim and help repair the cabin as well as play jokes on us girls. He gave and gave of his time his treasure and his talents and ended up with very few worldly possessions but a multitude of Grace's in Heaven I'm quite sure. He was  is and always will be One of a Kind. I will miss him dearly. I love you Markie
