Tante Eke, was a beautiful lady.  She knit me a blanket once.  She always greeted me with kindness.   She will now be reunited her dear Jan  and two of her children, Hans and Joan.  God Bless her. What a life and legacy she has left behind.

I only had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Eke recently and sadly for me, for only for a short few years. 

The first time I spoke to Eke, I was walking into Extendicare to visit my dad. I had seen Eke a few times in the hallway, I knew she was a new resident. I stopped and introduced myself. 
Eke told me that she was originally from the Netherlands. The night before I had just watched a movie called 'Winter in Wartime' - a movie about the Netherlands during WWII. 
I told her so. 
Eke said to me, "I don't need to watch that movie, I lived it."
"Oh! You must have been a child during that time." I said. 
"A child! I had children of my own!" she exclaimed. 
Without even thinking, I blurted out, "How old ARE you?" 
I know, it sounds so incredibly rude, but I was so shocked that she could have been old enough to have children at the time. 
Thankfully, Eke took it as a compliment and  just laughed at me and told me her age. 
I couldn't believe it. I thought she was 20 years younger and about the same age as my dad. 
Eke became a friend to both me and my dad. 
I would have loved to have met her sooner in life and known her better and longer. She seemed like such a firecracker of a character. 
My thoughts and heart are with her family and friends. 


Nan, although we weren't related by blood you always carried a special place in my heart. Growing up with Meme you made me feel as if I was one of your own grandchildren. Being spoiled with your delicious spaghetti and sugar cookies was such a treat.
Your smile, sense of humor and energy would always fill me with joy, you were a woman I could look up to. Independent yet delicate with a heart of gold. 
Rest in peace Nan, till we meet again. 

Dear   Oma    we  were  do  blessed  to   have  you   in  our   life   for  so  long.   You   leave  us  with  so  many  happy  fun  memories  and   I'm  grateful  for  that.    You  have  said  you  have  had  such  a  wonderful  enrich  life.   I  loved our  time   eating  chicken  nuggets   having French  vanilla coffee.   Lots  of  walks  and  talks.  You  have  always  been  our   ray   of   sunshine  .   Your  jokes  made  everyone's  day.   You  are   going  to  be  missed  dearly.  We  all  will  have  many   talks  of  you  many  laughs  you  left   .thank  you  oma   for   being  there   for  me   always   .  Love  and   cherish your  memories  forever  .. grand daughter  cindy bowie

R.I.P Oma. 99 years on this earth, what a life time. I can only imagine the things you have seen and experienced. Thank you for all the treats you baked, homemade Oma’s soup, and raisin bread. Thank you for putting up with us crazy kids on the way to church with nan and for all the knitting and plastic canvas decor. You will be missed dearly. 

I am so sorry to hear this news.  I loved your Oma, as my own.  It was a pleasure and a privilege to care for her.  She reminded me so much of my own, even coming from the same area of the Netherlands.  She will be greatly missed.   Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
