George graduated from Riverdale Collegiate, where he played football on the school team. His love of the game carried over into his adult life, when he joined pickup games with the men at work and tossed the ball around with his kids. And he never missed a Grey Cup parade!
George started his working career at Excelsior Life/Aetna/Manulife fresh out of highschool and continued there through to retirement. He was a true company man. Over the years he made many friends there, and became a member of the “Old Boys Club”, a group that would gather at Christmas each year to share good times, good food and reminisce. He looked forward to those times when he could reconnect with old friends.
George was very active in his church, serving as a warden at St. Ninian’s Anglican church in Scarborough, and later at St. Peter's. George and his wife Marion were members of the St. Ninian’s Couples Club, a social group who enjoyed many outings over the years. They continued this tradition for 50 years! Even after many members moved on to other parishes, the St. Ninian’s Couples Club continued to meet and enjoy good times.
George was a quiet, thoughtful man standing behind the spotlight while lending his quiet strength to those he loved. He cherished his parents, Robert and Irene Bryan and was dedicated to his brother Bob. He loved his children, Cathy (David Button) and James (Carol Bryan) wholeheartedly and was always available with words of encouragement and advice. He shared many happy times with his grandchildren Laura (Ryan Genier), Andrew (Melinda Button), Douglas, Jeffrey (d.1998), Mikayla and Colin. His great-grandchildren Alyson and Benjamin added great joy to his later years But foremost, he loved his wife Marion. Theirs was a lifelong commitment to each other, spending 64 happy years together. It brings us peace to know that George and Marion are together again, sharing their love forever.
George will be remembered for his quiet patience, perseverance, loyalty, support and love. We will miss him greatly.
Family and friends are invited to join us for a Celebration and Thanksgiving for the life of George Bryan on Saturday September 23rd at 11:00 in the Chapel at Giffen-Mack Funeral Home, 4115 Lawrence Avenue East, Scarborough.
