Jackie was born on September 26, 1926, in Wooster, Ohio, to Albert and Hyacinth Laurabelle (Girard) Schafer. She was the second of seven children and grew up surrounded by family, faith, and strong values that remained with her throughout her long life.
She married William Docherty, and together they raised four children in Ohio before moving to Glasgow, Scotland, where their fifth child was born. After two years abroad, the family relocated to Canada, first settling in Oshawa, then West Hill, Ontario. In her later years, after William passed, she married Donald Mintz of Scarborough. After being twice widowed, Jackie made her home in Burlington, Ontario, where she found love again with her beloved fiancée, Gordon Schottlander.
Jackie dedicated 21 years of service as the office manager and bookkeeper at St. Joseph’s Church in West Hill. After retiring, she embraced her creative side, taking night classes in art and learning to sketch and paint in both watercolours and oils. She especially loved painting family portraits and landscapes. A woman of deep faith and community, Jackie was a long time member of the Catholic Women’s League. She also enjoyed following sports; cheering on the Cleveland Guardians, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Toronto Blue Jays. She often enjoyed playing FreeCell on her computer.
Jacqueline is lovingly survived by her fiancée, Gordon Schottlander; her siblings in Ohio, Elaine Forrer and Ronald Schafer; and her five children: Mary (John), Patrick, David, Kevin (Rina), and Timothy (Christine). She will be missed by her grandchildren James (Sarah), Daniel (Amanda), Laura, Matthew, Mark, Ryan, Tara (Daniel), and Michael, and by her cherished great-grandchildren Nora, Ronan, Conall, and Natalie.
She was predeceased by her parents, her two husbands, and her siblings Corrine Elliot (Dwight), Regina Knight (Robert Drouhard), Joyce Chenevey (Mel), and Joanie Schafer.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and PSWs whose compassion and care meant so much to Jacqueline and her loved ones.
Her greatest legacy is the family she loved so deeply and the countless lives she touched along the way.
