Janet Doreen Grant (nee: Alleyne), beloved mother and friend, passed away on October 30th, 2025. Mom found peace and comfort from all family and friends who visited, called, sent prayers and videos to surround her with love.
Janet was born on October 10, 1934, to Phinetta (Netta) Verbeke and Fitzgerald Alleyne in what was then, British Guiana; now Guyana. She is survived by her children Carl (Pamela) and Carol, as well as her grandchildren Daniel (Pauline), Tyler, Gillian (Whitman), and Carly, and great grandchildren Malcolm and Tierra.
After attending the Teachers Training College in Georgetown, British Guiana and teaching at the elementary school level, Janet immigrated to Canada with her two young children and then husband, Rudolph Grant in 1965. She continued to pursue her lifelong profession and passion as an educator and attained her Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) Toronto. She enjoyed a 30 year career with the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) as both classroom teacher and Special Education Consultant. She was also an active member of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA).
Tears of remembrance for a grand lady are being shed. Her love of life meant taking in as much of it as she could through travel, theatre, music, and many other pastimes. As an educator, her love of teaching was unwavering and brought her much pride and joy as she worked to support her students' growth and development. Her love of family was complete with celebrations of achievements, worrying about the hurdles placed in front of them, and support for their wishes and dreams.
