Lorne was the beloved son of the late Stanley and Doris Preston. He is survived by Dorie, his loving wife and soul mate of more than 40 years; cherished by children Sarah (Kevin), Scott (Michelle), Laura (Leif) and Heather (Richie); adored by grandchildren Cole, Austin, Rylan, Logan, Haven, Arthur, Felix, Marigold, Bennett and Oliver; always loved by siblings Marianne (Cliff), Sue (Larry), Jan, Rob (Janice), and Cyndy (Shaun). He is forever connected with his twin brother Larry (died in infancy). Lorne was a respected uncle to a host of nieces and nephews, and has had a profound effect on extended family, friends, hospital staff, students and neighbours.
Lorne was a devoted elementary school teacher at the Scarborough Board of Education (TDSB) where he was known for practical ‘real life’ math lessons, engaging group discussion, chess club, coaching, and carefully refined lessons, such as teaching his students the ‘J stroke’ paddling technique on their desks.
Throughout Lorne’s life he had a variety of eclectic and highly focused interests, including woodworking, falconry, archery, taxidermy, athletics, pool and lawn maintenance, gardening, weight-lifting, cycling and motorcycling, canoeing, drawing and painting, but wildlife photography was his passion and where he felt he truly excelled.
Lorne’s family was the most important part of his life. His wit and dad jokes were next level.
A connection to nature and animals was foundational to Lorne’s being. He found peace amongst the trees, fresh air and delighted in early morning solo photography sessions capturing birds of prey that have been featured in Nature Conservancy of Canada publications.
Lorne is loved beyond measure. His legacy will live on through his wisdom, the birds, his kindness, and through each of us.
“Take care of each other”.
A celebration of life to honour Lorne will take place on Thursday, February 5, 2026, from 2-5 pm, at St. Dunstan of Canterbury - Main Hall at 56 Lawson Rd. in West Hill.
