On December 27TH we lost a Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Brother-in law, uncle and a dear friend. We would like to share some of Rudy’s life with you.
Rudy was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1934. He has a twin sister Doris who now lives in Brampton Ontario. Rudy and Doris grew up in the country side near Stuttgart with their Grandparents and their younger sister Christa; who has passed in 2008.
In June 1956 Rudy immigrated to Canada by Boat, the “Seven Seas” landed in Quebec City and from there Rudy traveled by train to Toronto. While traveling to Toronto, he met other young male immigrants who also had no place to stay. Fortunately, one lady at Union station was looking for borders and she gave the young men rooms to stay in.
Shortly after, Rudy had all of his documents in order he found a job as a Welder in the west end of the city. For a short time he did work at various companies until he started at TRI CANADA where he worked for a number of years. After the company was sold to the US, Rudy was offered a job with ADM STAINLESS INC; it is a family owned company where he stayed until he retired.
Rudy loved the outdoors, especially Georgian Bay area where he spent almost every weekend since he came to Canada. He explored Ontario with his new immigrant friend’s and together they made long lasting friendships that were cherished for life. He married in Amalia Keller in 1969 and together they raised a son, Norbert. As a family they did a lot of camping during the summer months across Canada, through to the east and west coast, Northern US and eastern US. A majority of the family’s weekends were spent at friends and family’s cottages up north where Rudy was able to enjoy the outdoors.
Rudy was very involved and supportive of each sport Norbert chose to pursue, as a family they traveled to each sporting event and he looked forward to each one. This support carried through from when Norbert was in elementary all the way through to when he attended University. His love for sports continued years after as he would gather with friends and family to watch a sporting event.
Closer to retirement, Rudy and Amalia took the opportunity to travel and enjoy life. They were able to go on a few cruises with friends and family and had the chance to travel to Europe. Rudy was able to visit his home town Stuttgart in 2005 where he got to reconnect with distant family.
When the Grandchildren came along he adored them, anything they asked or needed he was there to love and support them. Amanda and Sam were his pride and joy. He especially enjoyed going to each sporting event to support the two of them, whether it be a dance competition in New York or a swim meet in Ottawa, he was always there to support his grandchildren.
Through his life, Rudy loved children. All the neighborhood kids came to visit and spend time with him in the garden or deck. Rudy loved his back yard; cutting the grass, planting a few vegetables and just relaxing with his News paper on the deck having coffee. He enjoyed having drinks with anybody that dropped by the house.
After retirement, Rudy enjoyed staying active and keeping busy around the house and backyard. He started to take aqua fit and toning and conditioning classes at the local YMCA. Rudy loved to go for walks with the Scarborough Walkers where he was able to meet new friends and share his love for the outdoors.
In 2007 Rudy had to have a stomach operation which ended up being cancer. He then had to go for chemo and radiation treatment, all seemed to go well and he was almost back to normal. During a trip to Arizona in 2010 Rudy begin to feel unwell. After his Blood check he was diagnosed with a new cancer in the bone marrow (Multiple Myeloma). Several treatments follow but in August 2015 treatments were no longer effective for Rudy.
Through all of this Rudy was always positive and never complained. He had all the support from his Friends and Family to help him through this trying time. Rudy is no longer in pain and is at peace now.
The Family would like to extend their gratitude to all who have helped Rudy through this trying time, it meant a lot to him and also to us. Thank you to everyone for joining us in the celebration of Rudy’ life, we are grateful for your continued support. Rudy truly lived for family and friends. Family and friends may gather at Giffen-Mack Funeral Home & Cremation Centre 4115 Lawrence Ave E. (one block west of Kingston Rd) on Saturday January 9, 2015 from 10am to 11am. A Memorial Service will follow at 11am in the chapel of the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to Myeloma Canada (www.myelomacanada.ca) .
