Dorothy was born July 12, 1931 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach; she attended St Ann’s Catholic School from First Grade through High School, graduating in 1949. In the fall, she attended the College of St. Elizabeth in New Jersey, graduating from St. "E's" with a degree in Biological Sciences. She loved her College and served the Alumni Association in various official roles for her entire life. Dorothy began her career in medical research for Schering Pharmaceuticals, later working as a medical lab specialist in various hospitals.
She is predeceased by her devoted husband of 61 years, John Raymond Matyskiel, sister Janice Cecelia Egnor and son-in-law, Michael Shulha. She is survived by her Children: John R. Matyskiel, Marian Matyskiel Shulha (Michael) and Robert E. Matyskiel (Lori), her four grandchildren: Cortney Shulha, Travis Shulha, Kaitlin Matyskiel Williams (Hunter), Robert Matyskiel II, her one great-granddaughter: Kora Jane Williams and numerous nieces and nephews.
She met her future husband in 1951 at an American Chemical Society Dance at Seton Hall University. They were engaged at her graduation from St. "E's" in 1953. She later received her Master's Degree from Seton Hall University in Audiology.
Dorothy and John were married in St. Juliana’s Church in West Palm Beach, FL, July 2, 1955. For the next 20 years, they lived in Pine Brook, New Jersey, in the country. Together, they physically built their own home and raised their children. The family enjoyed camping, which they did every long weekend and during vacations, traveling throughout the East coast and the Midwest. Catholic Stalwarts, Dorothy & John were founding family members of the newly created parish St. Pius X Church & School in Montville, NJ, 1960-1976, involved in school and parish activities, all their children graduated from the newly created grammar school.
Dorothy returned home to her beloved Florida and moved with John and the children to West Palm Beach, in 1976. They designed and built another home in Lake Worth with their son Robert. Dorothy began a new career, returning to medical science, this time as a biology teacher, joining the Science Department at Boca Raton High School where she taught for the next 20 years. Upon retirement, she resumed part-time teaching of biology & science for the Palm Beach County Adult Education system for the next 10 years.
Finding a new church home at St. Luke's Church in Lake Worth in 1976, Dorothy was an active member of CCW. She and John continued their faithful devotion for the next 45 years serving in various school and parish activities for the remainder of their lives.
Friends will be received from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 5411 Okeechobee Blvd. West Palm Beach, FL 33417. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Luke Catholic Church, 2892 S. Congress Avenue, Palm Springs, FL 33461, followed by interment at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery, 10941 Southern Blvd, Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411.
