Philip and his wife were graduates of Eastlake North High School in Ohio. He graduated from Cleveland State University after serving in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War.
He co-owned Barton Air Traffic Company which set up control towers at small airports. He manned and trained veterans to service these towers. He set up the 1st Air Traffic Control school, outside of the military, at the University of New Mexico.
He then went on to work with his Uncle John Heim at Spectro Equipment, a company which he later bought. This company was a steel fabricating and electronic company. One of his power supplies was used to determine, on one of the manned NASA flights, if the cracks on the wings were just surface cracks, which would enable the crew to return safely. Of this he was most proud.
He was very civic minded in the town of North Royalton, Ohio, where we resided for 40 years. He was a member of Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. He also was a city councilman. He was very active in St. Albert parish. He was the first president of the PTO, the athletic director for many years and coached girls’ basketball. He was also very active in the fundraising activities at the church.
When he sold the company, he became a Nationwide Insurance Agent for 25 years. During this time he was also a currier for Fifth Third Bank. Not wanting his children to have any student debts, he delivered the Cleveland Plain Dealer for 15 years.
In 2018 he and his wife moved to West Palm Beach. Both daughters now live close by. Phil loved to travel. He and his wife enjoyed cruising. But he really enjoyed traveling all over the U.S. and Canada following his grandsons’ hockey careers and recently his granddaughter’s gymnastics competitions.
Phil was a very proud veteran. Unfortunately, Philip was affected by Agent Orange in Viet Nam. He managed it the best he could. But at the end it took him quite suddenly with his wife and daughter by his side. His funeral Mass will be at Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church, 100 Crestwood Blvd. S., Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411 at 12:30 on Thursday April 23, 2026.Phil will be buried with military honors at the South Florida Veterans Cemetery following the Mass.
